Getting through immigration at Nosy Be can take a long time but a 'helpful' police officer will assist you for a small bribe – 20,000 normally works.

They then give you a 72 hour stamp and assure you that there will be no problems with leaving but make sure you remember the officer's name.

What the police do not appear able to do with this short-cut route is arrange for a proper pasted-in visa.

On departing they will ask about overstaying your visa at the first police check but tell them that officer 'X' assured you it was OK. At the actual passport check they will again say it is out of date and another small bribe will sort the problem.

This has happened both to me and a friend without any issues.

Just picture: you drive into a police control on the road to Hellville. What you think the police will do? Listen to your story of officer X? No. They will straight take you to their station and most likely back to the airport with a big stamp in your passport never again to come to Mada.

Please stop this practice of paying bribes. Every time you (or someone else) do this it only encourages them more. And you are playing with fire by bypassing the proper immigration procedure. One of these times the guy who is supposed to help you out when you leave won't be there, or his even greedier superior will get involved. You won't be feeling so smart by the time that is all sorted out.

It is surely a matter of making an objective judgement. I have previously refused to pay bribes when crossing the Rwanda-Uganda border but when there is a positive benefit, such as being fast-tracked through immigration, there is a clear benefit.

On an occasion that I refused to tip security guards they complained to the owner of a villa that we had been bringing girls back, they reported us to Airbnb, and I lost my account.

So, yes you are right, we should refuse to give them a bribe or 'soda money' or whatever they call it if they are merely doing their job, but if you are getting an additional benefit it makes sense.

Discussed here many times. And the guys will be very happy to get their 13th salary or worse inform immigration and then the shit will hit the fan.

And the issuing of the visa takes nowadays no longer as you need to wait on your luggage.

For all the smart people out there. It is actually printed on the landing card. It's 90 days maximum stay. Then it's bye bye. Fly out to areéunion for 500€ return. Than you can re-enter. Other solutions are illegal. If you run into a control of police nationale they check your visa. If you're caught overstaying it's jail and deportation. The only other way to stay longer than 90 days without leaving Madagascar is you apply for a resident permit. A so called "Visa Long Séjour" which cannot be issued in Madagascar itself. Other solutions exist of course. All illegal.

Fast track to jail. You had a stamp allowing you 72 hours in the country. No proper tourist visa. As Amadeuss and South Easter mentioned. If you stopped by the regular police nationale checkpoint between Dzamandzar and Hell Ville and they find you sans papier. They'll lock you up. As easy as that. The immigration rules are printed on every landing card which you receive and you have to complete. In English. So no excuse there. I've seen smart asses over the years. Most were deported and fleeced out of money.

According to e-visa website you can get e-visa or visa on arrival for max 60 days and extension is permitted as quote below:

So you will get 60 days and then 90 days and then is bye bye? Or I missing something there?

Nobody I know does eVisa. No advantage. Get VOA. 1 year back they granted only 60 days on arrival. Pain in the a. That's what's meant on the landing card. Extension for 30 days. Now you get 3 months VOA. And that's it. No extension. Maximum allowed stay on a VOA 3 months. The day imprinted on the visa sticker that's the day to leave Madagascar. You can technically fly out and return the next day. You get another 3 months VOA.

The cheaper route is the residence permit. But. They let you jump through a burning hoop. Without french and a good contact / Visa facilitator ZERO chance to get one. And be prepared to spend 3 to 5 months in Tana until your papers are processed.
