I'll give a little advice. Accent and pronounciation go a long ways when speaking Japanese. If you've been here 5+ years and can speak well but your hatsuon sucks, the shops will perceive you as a fresh tourist.
It's also good to know the kanji for all the basic services. One time I filled out a questionnaire about what kind of service I wanted and I accidentally circled the one meaning snowball cause I couldn't read it. Yea, I'm sure the look on my face when the chick tried to do that was priceless. Don't worry, I think in most cases snowballing is not a basic service.
