I suggest this may speak more to your lifestyle than Thai speak. Consequently for you it may have been a life saver to know it, but to some residents it's just a WOT and a pain in the arse.

But to Barko, self confessed black sheep of his family, my lifestyle would no doubt be boring. When you add a few more notches and years to your belt, young fella, you will likely mellow out a bit. I may be wrong but I would expect that if we lived in a Matrix like world where we could shove software into our head and instantly know Thai most of us would do. What are the drawbacks? Insulting Hi-so's by using Thai? Knowing people are badmouthing us left and right? Who cares and honestly I would love to know what the girls are saying about me bad or good - "he have big heart but small dick". But for many of us Thai is a nightmare to learn and everyone has to make their own decison about time/effort vs reward. If you are not here for business and are just enjoying the fruits of your previous labor there probably isn't a big payback. I am trying because I am finding it fun so far - and I hope it continues to be. I am just covering the days of the week, colors and body parts so it will be a while till I get to insults and curse words. I went into this classy bar one night/early morning (1am) because I was invited by a few expat buddies. Upon getting there, I started up a conversation with a girl, who was sitting near by. The conversation goes well and I even order her a drink.
During the course of the conversation I found out that she is an acct with some Thai company, graduated from one of the better university with a degree, and the usually details.

I'm getting quite a kick out of this discussion for two reasons: first, because it reaffirms my certainty that the tendency to make fun of the farangs is by no means unique to Thailand and second, because I it makes me wonder why anyone even cares?
As to the universality--within SE Asian at least--of denigrating foreigners, it happens all the time in the Philippines, where women will explain to each other, right in front of the guys whom they're banging, that they're only in it for the money; it happens in Vietnam, in Cambodia, in Malaysia and in Hong Kong, all countries in which I've lived, worked or vacationed. Now that I live in the Philippines, I'm more conscious of it since my lady will often translate for me the conversations going on around me that I cannot understand. (Who knows, maybe she's telling her friends the same thing about me.)
As to the second point, does it really make a difference? It seems to me that there's an effective symbiosis to these relationships: the girls are living better than they ever could with the local losers, and we're all getting laid more, with much more attractive women, than would have been possible at home. The bottom line I guess, is that if you want a relationship based on "mutual respect" then stay in the West, or at least leave those expectations at home once you decide to venture Eastward.

I had a funny conversation with my language teacher recently, regarding an outing with a group of Thais, where there was one lesbian couple.
According to her, on an outing like that, sharing rooms, a guy can't sleep in the girls' room. A girl can't sleep in the guys' room. But a lesbian girl can sleep in the girls' room with her lover. A ladyboy can't sleep in the girls' room, he has to sleep in the guys' room.

Pink, I don't need any more notches. Please read my reply to OTH about the life possible in Thailand. I don't think I need to say it again, there are those that live it, and those who think they are, but are missing it, and those that are missing it completely. If you are living here on fixed income, there are other choices and opportunities available to you. If you are living in Thailand wondering what you are going to do next with your life, there are no excuses for you. Opportunities are endless here.
Betong synopsis:
Betong: Had overstayed visa due to a glitch on the part of a Thai holiday with a Monday closing, and the immigration office in Phuket deciding on a whim to close the previous Thursday afternoon and Friday as well. I had to be in Trang to look at some commercial property that weekend, then had a meeting with Chinese client in Penang, Malaysia (corporate mover = needed hand holding) Drove the 4X4 down Trang, then to Betong by way of Yala, intending to to cross border there and head down to the ferry at Butterworth. (Chinese client's family was from Betong, picked up his older brother and about four kilos of maps & Thai legal paperwork.)
Betong border found me sitting on top an immigration officer's desk, doing my best attempt at Scheherazade, trying to explain some of the old stuff (ancient in fact) that had magically appeared on their computer down there. Never had any problem before, ever, and have entered and exited the country literally hundreds of times, every single border crossing in Thailand, not one have I missed at one time or another. (Had a buddy from legal pay off the powers that be to make this computer stuff all go away, stupidity generated by misguided a Thai immigrationette in Chiang Mai, looking for something from me that I could never give, not my own doing at all.)
Betong was fun, but at the beginning of the episode, they had called the police, who were also there, bored to tears, and wanting to have something resolved asap. The Chinese brother had wisely just taken a seat outside the office and let me do my thing. It ended with everybody smiling away, laughing, and them telling me to come back to visit. It had taken about four hours for them to finally let me go on though the long border to Malaysia, This entire thing was all in the THAI language of course, with a little TeowChew slang thrown in for fun. (Betong is Thai, but all the people there are ethnic Chinese.)
I've owned homes and raw property in Thailand for over 25 years, have been on both the winning and the losing side of things lots of times. Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai, Mae Hong Son, Chai Nat, Bangkok, Phuket, Krabi, Songkla, etc. You play with the big dogs long enough and somebody gets a fat bite taken out of their ass a time or two. (Hint: anyone that says a farang can't own property in Thailand, is either a little more than a little slow on the draw, or simply not as clever as they need to be to live here. No PMs please.) The end justifies the means.
Again, if you are playing for real in Thailand (sorry I don't care what any religion says, you have one time around to make your thing happen, and one time only) then somebody is going to get burned every once in a while. You have to be the one that makes damn sure it doesn't happen to you. If you survive, you CAN have a pretty good life here.

Quick one: Down on the road where I exit my driveway there is a well off Thai family with a nice home at the corner of the lane. I talk to them all the time. The wife there told me a great story about how her husband just qualified to buy a hand gun (pistola) to keep in the house (again, if you are monied up enough here, anything is possible.) He got a new .357 magnum. Last night, the guy spent the entire evening looking at himself in the mirror, posing, talking to himself and making out like he was cowboy, and indian, a cop, a thief, etc. The wife thought this to be hilarious, of course, and related it to me with a tremendous amount of mirth, enthusiasm, and outrageously well animated gyrations. We both spent 20 minutes in total uncontrolled laughter as she told and retold the story. Now, get it for yourself: I would never have experienced this supreme moment in time had I not known the people, their culture and their language, intimately. This has nothing to do with anything but the sharing of pure heart to heart communication with another human being. If you limit yourself, it is your own fault.
You have one time around the block. Be lazy at your own expense, just stay out of the way of the dudes who aren't. I don't plan to retire for another 20 years, having too much of a good time doing what I do now.

People that can't speak the language in the country where they live, are like those who don't know how to read. Hide it, defend it, absolve yourself of it, but in the end you are like the person missing the joys of reading a great book. Being ignorant of the possibilities of life, you are missing out on the realities of life. Why go through life deaf and dumb if all it takes is a few minutes a day to educate yourself? Inexcusable.

For kids, time is more important than money, although probably more of a sacrifice for you. For what it's worth, my opinion is if you're not thinking of sticking around then you should dump as much money on her mother now as it takes to assuage your guilt and clear out. Let the parent who's prepared to put in the hard yards decide.

Since money is not an issue, send her to the U.S. Better opportunities for her before and after graduation.
