I like casas but it's pain sometimes to take taxi and search for them. I am looking for equivalent of craigslist here where I can call the girls directly and pay. My budget is $50-70 per hour. Is this possible? I live in Laureles.

Are there any casas in Laureles area?

Interesting that you had no idea where to find casas. How did you know of them at all? How did you find this website?

I'm willing to bet that no one that reads this board does not know where the casas are. As well as knowing that if you go to the Medellin Lists, there is detailed info about addresses and pricing readily available FOR FREE. Even a newbie can copy and paste and print or just write down a few addresses.

I think Colombia Jake offers a decent service for a complete stranger to the scene. I do think that $35 for just 3 hours then $8 dollars each additional hour is a bit pricey though (a 5 hour tour will set you back $56 dollars!).

Boyd at the Casa Blanca 1&2 offers the same type of daytime casa tours for free but you do need to be a guest.

If there was no web info and you are totally clueless, then $39 room per night and at least one 3 hour tour is not a bad deal for the newbie or even for a guy on a budget.

In Rio there was a fella name Don who used to charge $200 a week to practically hand hold newbies. I thought at first that it was dumb to use such a service. Later after getting to know Don I could appreciate how much work it was to look out for what was sometimes a flock of clueless Gringos. Even took a few off his hands at times to attend a couple of my festinhas (orgies). He more than earned his costs in translations and keeping these guys from getting ripped off alone.

BTW- Howard I have to ask: Where is your report? Give us some details as to how the tour (s) went. Did you do only the day tour or the night tour as well? Did you stay at Jake's? If so how was the experience.

Lastly where and how did you find Colombia Jake's website on the internet? I tried several Google searches and unless you put in Colombia Jake in your search, his website does not come up.

This is a story that I'd wanted to tell, but hard to convey, I will try.

The day was January 1st, 2011, a Saturday, my plane leaves at 2, so I need to be at the airport at 12 or so.

A girl, prepago, was supposed to arrive at 9 am, on the morning of the 1st, and though I didn't really believe she'd show, I needed some money in case she did. So out I went, from my 4th story apt, at 8 am or so, looking for an ATM. I got some dough, but she didn't show up, so I sauntered out again.

I found a place for some coffee and croissants down on Avenida Poblado. 43a, near the intersection with calle 10. Walking up 10 calle, I found another spot open for business, and ordered more coffee and bread.

Sitting down on the sidewalk, drinking my coffee, around 9:45, this is near Parque Lleras, I saw some taxistas. I said to them, it doesn't look to me like you are working, but they said yes we are, and I told them that I needed a ride to the airport.

How they decide these things I don't know, but one of them was going to give me a ride to the airport, and he offered to give me a ride to my apt, which was just a few blocks up calle 10. So I said OK, he took me up there, and I told him I'the be just a little while packing my things. He waited on the street (Ave 37).

He was very personable, a big guy really. 6 foot or 6 foot 1, 180 or 190, 38 years old.

I walked up the four flights to my apt, entered and cleaned things up and packed. I don't carry much, so this didn't take long.

I considered carefully, but convinced that I'd packed everything and left nothing behind I left the keys in the apt and closed the heavy, ponderous door.

I walked down one flight of steps, turned around to continue down and confronted a metal gate. I'd forgotten the gate on the 3rd floor, which was locked as I had closed it coming up. Pondering. I pondered the situation. There was another apt there, sort of on floor 3 1-2, but although you could hear music, no one answered the doorbell. I looked over the situation carefully, and became aware that there were bars everywhere, there was simply no way to get down to the next level without a key.

For a considerable time, 5 to 10 minutes, I simply thought. Finally, seeing the taxista down on the street beginning to pace, perhaps impatiently, I called down to him, estoy preso, I am a prisoner. He asked for the number of the apt that was accessible to me, the one from which music came, and he rang the apt from below, but no one answered.

Time passed, and he alerted other residents. There were a number of ladies, very kind, and they came out from their apts on the morning of the New Year, if not in batas (bathrobes) in some sort of informal dress, and it seemed like each lady tried their key to floor 3 1-2. But they didn't have the key to a floor above them.

We talked about what to do, it really seemed insoluble. The caretaker for my apt did not answer the phone, seguro que andaba guayabo (he had a hangover). One of the ladies had the idea to go for a locksmith, and she and the taxista rode in the taxi to the locksmith's house, but he was unavailable that New Year's morning (guayabo seguro). We continued to ponder.

An older, somewhat frail guy mentioned a ladder. I said well, a ladder won't hurt, and somehow he procured a ladder. It was a wooden ladder, and I swear I recall that at least one of the slats, maybe two, were broken.

By that time, the taxista, the older frail guy, and the women, 2 or 3, were all collected on what I will call the 3rd floor, below me.

To try to give you an idea, each floor was basically parallel to the one above, if that means anything. What I mean is that from my vantage, looking out, obviously I was standing on a floor, but at waist height was a wall of sorts, and beyond that was nothingness, and beyond that the street. And on each floor below, and there were at least two, it was the same. So to see the people, the taxista, the old thin guy, and the women who were trying to help me this Saturday morning, January 1st, I had to lean out and look down to see them, and of course they had to look up to me.

Thinking, thinking, pondering, pondering. The only feature that offered some difference, hope, or whatever you want to call it, was that the apt at level 3 1-2, had a balcony. So I am standing on level 3, the border or 1-2 wall in front of me at waist height, but to my left, beginning a little above the height of my head, is a balcony with iron railings. So I tell the people assembled below, that I am going to go out and hang off the balcony railings and see where I stand (or hang). As I recall I could keep my left foot on the 4 foot wall, so if I felt like I was totally out of control, I could come back in.

The taxi guy asked me if I really wanted to do that, saunter out, hang off the rails, but I affirmed to him that I did, with the idea that I could come back in if necessary.

Before I ventured out, I handed-tossed down my leather jacket and my cell phone, to the taxi guy one floor below. I always carry a pen, and on that occasion I had a baseball cap, and the pen I tossed down to the ground, to get a sense of reality I suppose. I did the same with the cap, and it circled lazily down some 30 to 40 feet to the ground below.

The frail older guy proposed balancing or 'footing' the ladder on the 4 foot wall below, some 4 or 5 inches in width, but I vetoed that, and I insisted that the ladder had to rest solidly on the floor below.

I ventured out, hanging from the railings. I had a firm grasp on the iron railings. I transferred my left foot from the 4 foot, 4 inch thick wall, to the old wooden ladder. As I put more weight on it, it slipped. I think at that point the taxista, the strong 38 year old, replaced the frail older dude as the wooden ladder holder.

But even then, there was the crucial next step. For some period of time, it was necessary for me to have all my weight on my left foot, on the ladder, let go with my hands and step down with my right foot to the 4 foot wall below. So there was this special instant of time upcoming, perhaps a second or two.

I told the taxista, who had the ladder at this point, that there could be no more slipping, no more anything, había llegado el momento clave, the key point in time. He said OK.

Suddenly, I made that transition, all the weight on the left foot on the ladder, let go of the railings, a moment, and then the right foot on the 4 foot wall. 30 feet was below. The taxista held firm. It was over.

Everyone was happy, hooping and hollering as befits January 1st. Some of the ladies talked in English partially. As I descended, we all celebrated. I wished everyone Feliz New Year.

The taxista took me to the airport. He said to me a few things. One, the lady on the floor below me, had told him that it was too difficult to find a real boyfriend, she thought (laughingly) she would arrange a prepago. Also, he said he didn't think he would have done that (what I had done). And he had a saying, no somos ladrones pero hacemos maromas. (we aren't thieves but we do acrobatics).

We talked a lot on the way to the airport, he was successful in business but he had been denied a visa to the US, and he was resentful. I enjoyed talking to him and tipped him. And we parted.

Just back from a week long visit to Medellin.

This trip reminded me of the Eagles song, Take it Easy, and the 7 Paisas on my mind. 4 that want to own me. 2 that want to stone me and 1 says she's a friend of mine hahaha.

Throw in a Superbowl Party at the Casa Blanca 2 and it was a pretty fun trip overall.

I'm just back in Miami, still tired from last night's after (super bowl) party, so a better report tomorrow and a few fotos to keep Cubanut off my back hahaha, just kidding amigo.

once before the the mansion or castillo were around in medellin there was the penthouse. it's the altos de parrill (sp?). ten stories then an 11th floor where the bedrooms and outdoor pool are.

well one day greg wasn't around and robert was out of town. one of staff had left her keys in her room and had accidentally locked the door to her room. two other girls had taken to dissembling the door knob harness an still could not open the locked door. so one of the girls had the idea to place a wood plank from a room who's window was on an agle form the locked room. she then was going to crawl on the wood plank across to the window of the locked room.

one of the girls came up to my room and asked me to talk the girl out of trying because any slip up or if the plank cracked meant a straight 10 story fall to certain death. so i came down just as the girl was about to start and i said no way was she to even try what she was thinking. so i asked them to show me the locked door. we went around to the other side and i saw the locked door with the disassembled doorknob. i looked at it for a whole 10 seconds then walked back into the kitchen and grabbed a plastic coated table coaster and went back to the locked door. using the plastic coaster the same as a credit card i slid it on strike plate and rested on the dead latch and holding the stem of the doorknob mechanism gave it a few shakes back and forth while applying forward pressure to the plastic coaster which slid further between strike plate and dead latch and whoa la! it opened!

the girls cheered and i got a big hug and kiss from the girl that was going to attempt the the crawl.

those colombianas got some balls, i'll give them that. but not much horse sense.

Planning my first trip to MDE. Wanting to stay at the Mansion 1 for a week until I get my bearings. Need suggestions on what room to reserve. Don't need a lot of space (cost) but, private bathroom a must for me. Thanks, Stay cool brothers[/QUOTE]At the Mansion 1, I think if you are looking for budget then stay in Room 8. Room 8 is smaller and has separate bathroom. If you can't get Room 8 then stay at Room 9. Room 9 is in the basement which they call the dungeon, but last time one of my friends stayed their and I saw the Room. Room 9 is not that bad especially if you consider privacy. Now I don't know how much noise goes down to Room 9 because it is below Kitchen.

As per cabbies in Medellin. I have seldom had any problems with them. Cab drivers in Medellin are not that bad. I only recall once a driver took me around due to communication problems and I was mad at him. What the driver did is just left me on the street where I can get another taxi easily. He did not take any money from me.

Later I thought that it was probably not the driver trying to rip me off of few bucks but my lack of explaining to him where I wanted to go.

Now if taxi driver problem has not happened to me does not mean it doesn't happen in Medellin. I am sure you will hear many complaints from other fellow mongers.
