Reason 1: it refunds me for additional POS fees. I do not know how they can do it without losing money, but they do it. Reason 2: I do not want to have my main account debit card with me, in case of issue they can potentially take a lot of my money. On Charles Schwab, instead, I keep at max 2-3 thousands USD. I keep the other Credit and Debit card in the hotel safe, or hidden somewhere, but not with me unless I need.

Whenever I can I use Davivienda Cajeros. I never had any issue with them.

Confirmed: Always refuse the proposed exchange rate. In Colombia most bank will continue with the transaction with no issue, and Davivienda is one of them. This is not true in other countries, for instance all the 7/11 ATM in Thailand (at least the 10 I tested) refuse the transaction if you do not accept their conversion. Charles Schwab sends me a text with the USD amount in real time, and the exchange rate is always very close to the google online exchange value. The difference is negligible.

Finally, I also uninstall my home banking apps from my phone except for the Charles Schawab one. Why? Well, 2 reasons: (1) If a criminal take me in his custody, he could force me to login my smartphone. If your phone has face recognition, this is extremely easy and you might be even unaware of it (a little bit of benzodiazepine from a girl and you sleep deeply while she scans your face). In these situations, it is better the criminal doesn't know how much money you have and where you keep it. (2) If they have you in custody, and have access to your smartphone, then they have access to the Multi Factor Authentication (txt messages or authentication apps) as well. In this case, they can auto approve all the transaction they want, not just the ATM ones, and you are badly screwed up. If there is a lot of money in your bank, they also have a good justification to make sure you do not try to revoke any transaction once you are free, and this is bad.

I don't think Colombia is so dangerous, but often we are exposed to additional risks and better to adopt passive countermeasure. If they take me, they only see my Charls Schwab account with 3 k USD.

The rest in another checking account that isn't on your phone. You can do a transfer between banks if you need to replenish Schwab or you get robbed.

IMO that would be bad. If your normal limit is 1 K per day, then they might hold you captive until 3 days, until they drain the account.

A better way would be to put 2 K in your brokerage account (or 1k and raise your ATM limit to 2K per day). You were required to open a brokerage account to get the Schwab card. Then you can transfer money into the Schwab bank when necessary. MAKE sure you turn off the overdraft transfer from your brokerage account. Another problem is that you can't transfer money on the weekends.

Wait. I guess that wouldn't work in your description because they have access to the Schwab account. It would list the brokerage account. I take mine off in my second phone. There exchange rates are always good. Just check it in your hotel room.

Traveling all over the world and hanging out in some really shady places, I have never been worried about somebody taking me and seeing what is in my bank account. Really be funny if that brother goes no further than Poblado. He acts like he is going on an ultra high risk secret spy mission and needs 8 contingency plans.

Planning to visit Medellin in Sept 2nd week. I went to Medellin few times so far and it was always a great experience. I stayed in Laureles, San Peters Apartments all of the times and I know the area pretty well. But this time I am planning to stay in El Poblado, can anyone please suggest any girl friendly hotels in that area or Airbnbs that you are aware of, looking for one with a Jacuzzi. Seeking, FB, Tinder, etc got all kinds of girls, from ugly to hot, and the rates vary a lot. You can use any platform to search for high quality girls, but it takes time and there is no guarantee they will settle for 600 k. You can also try Instagram, but focus on the chicas that don't have tens of thousands followers, or chicas that look hot but do not model. Just lower your expectations and adjust down what you can offer.

As someone who was scolped last November (by a 'non pro on 3rd date') no less, and had $25 k taken from me between credit cards and bank accounts, Charles Schwab and Chase were iron clad and stand up. Citibank not so much. I was eventually made completely whole, but some banks I found better than others.

BTW. I take no pride in sharing this. I'm just making it know that it does happen, even to those of us who have been in the hobby for 10+ years and take normal precautions (ie locking things up). Shit happens. Keep your guard up gentlemen!
