Gentlemen, I have seen a number of reports on cell phone use in the Philippines. However I am still unclear on it all.

I got off the phone tonight with Verizon Wireless. My new LG 8700 will not work in the Philippines because of technology differences. However, Verizon is happy to supply me with a global phone free of charge. The global phone still uses my USA number & line. All I have to pay for is the airtime or text messages.
However, cost is part of the dilemma. Calls are an astronomical $2.50 per minute, so I won't be talking to anyone. Text messages are 5¢ to receive and 50¢ to send. I can live with that.
However, in speaking with some local ladies I plan to meet, they tell me it is 25 pesos for them to text my phone internationally and they consider that expensive.

One girl suggested I buy a phone, but she said they cost 3000pesos ($75). I can't see any reason to spend $75 on a phone when mine is free. And $75 is alot of text messages.

I guess the ONE benefit of using the Global phone is I won't have to worry about any bar girls sending me constant text messages.... as I have heard some complain about that. But I also don't want some bar babe not texting me if I want her to because of the 25 peso cost.

To clarify, I am on a mixed mission on this upcoming trip. I am meeting about 8 girls to see if I can find one for a serious relationship. However I have also built some "fun time" into the equation. Probably 2 nites at LA Cafe and 2 nights in Angeles.

If I buy (or rent?) a phone locally for the week I am there, what are the realistic costs for the week?

Advice? Suggestions?

You can go into any pawn shop or used phone store--and there seem to be thousands of them--and buy a basic phone for $10-15 and then for another few dollars buy a local sim card which will give you a local number. You can then "charge" it as you need call time. A cell phone here is a must since texting is the basic form of communication. The problem with using your US phone is that most girls will not be able to afford to text you, so it's sort of self-defeating. Too bad that the US and Japan don't join the rest of the world by adopting the same technology.

GE has the right idea but the quality of some of the used cell phones I have seen for sale in the PI is laughable. Since you have a few weeks before your trip, try buying one on Ebay. Do a search for a used, unlocked GSM cp (I have seen them for as little as $25). There are many reputable companies on Ebay that will ship it to you in a few days, with a warranty. Then you can give it to your honey ko upon your departure. You can bring your global phone along in case of an emergency back home.
Btw, do you think two nights in AC is enough?

If u wanna go high tech, another option is to get a skype account. When u apply for an account use ur phils cp # as the user name. Now when u send a txt through skype the girls see the phils cp # as the caller id & assumes ur in the phils. This works almost all countries (except china & us if i recall correctly).

Skype if somebody does'nt know is voice calls over the internet cheap & also txt'ing over the internet cheap. If you have a 3g cp u get even trickier by placing skype call's/tst's through ur cp to the internet & then to the destination country phone system. Are your eyes spinning yet? heheh :)

What do you mean by laughable? The 1100 peso Nokio phone I bought on Colon St., Cebu two years ago still works and is now sold for 800 pesos.

I wonder what women think when they see my phone. They never ask. And if they have a phone it's light years ahead of my PI phone. I do get annoyed at the limit of in messages.....but considering I'm the type who can't throw anything away, this adds a little bit of sense to my life. Not throwing things away can be environmentally friendly too....my current X phone in X land is way out of date...to the point that it's a conversation starter.

I use voipcheap.com,it works very good, 0,05cent Euro to connect and then 0,08 cent per minute per call to a mobile cellphone in the Philippines.If i calll to US or within europen countries its free....yes...also for some asian countries, they have promos, check their website!! I also know skype and I will try that, Im out of the country now....how much the gurl pays if she reply my txt??? same like PI?? 1 piso?That would be cool, I like to play tricks on gurls and I sometimes dont like to know people wether Im in or out of the country...keep a low profile as a foreign resident, or else you will find yourself on channel 2 news :D

Follow the experienced guys; buy a cp in Phils - u get a used one for 1500peso or less in the shopping malls when u arrive there, test it before you buy so you are satisfied. Then get a globe or smart card for 100 peso, and another 100 peso give you 100 sms's. I normally use a lot more in a single week.

And this phone you can use also in the rest of the world, all over :)

Hi there, I checked this before and this is required by the Philippines law. The caller must identify his number, so you cannot hide your number. If you have to hide, the only options seems to be to call from an international phone or internet phone (Yahoo, Skype and more)

I agree with Good Enough that a simple cell phone is fine. I get refurbished/used one for about 15-20 at a phone shop in Colon. I don't need the bells and whistles, just something small enough to fit in my pocket.

Once I have a girlfriend lined up I don't really need the phone anymore.

Good summary GF. Let me add stuff. You need phone (+ charger)/ SIM card / load.

SIM card (thumbnail size IC chip) has the phone no. and the memory and you can buy a second one if you need to disappear for some reason. I think these will expire if you don't load them for six + months.

The load is your phone bill -- kind of debit card style. The cards are good for a year so I usually buy an extra one before my trip to X land. Then, next arrival I scratch off to reveal the code, I'm Globe so I call 223, you will hear recorded insturctions, input the code on the card. Back in business. Oh, if you're 40+ like me, make sure you have your reading glasses ready to input the code. Pain in the arse.

Go buy a used phone at a shop or kiosk with a cute lass - she will set everything up, let them teach you, how to use the phone AND MAKE SURE you get her number. Tell her, "you're the first one in my new phone".

If you have a steady girl, try to get same system as her: Globe or SMart.

I'm NOT smart. Duh. Get it?
