How do I not spending a fortune phoning within Poland with my UK based mobile phone, any/several options considered, please make replies simple, clear, step by step, and easily understood!!!

Can any of you guys recommend a decent online Polish/English dictionary? I'm trying to set up a few dates with non-pro girls before a trip to Poland later in the year.

If I fail, there's always the pros.

BTW - I tried using the international version of match.com and writing to girls in English (the one's who had posted ads in English) and got no responses. Thats why I think I'll try using some of the local sites instead. Anyone have any luck with match other wise?

just buy a local pre-paid sim card for your phone. or there are pre-paid cards for the public pay phone system. the former are available in the shops of the various gsm networks that are rep001tered all over warsaw, and poland generally; the latter can be bought (if memory serves me right 'cos i haven't used one in many years!) from news stands, kiosks, etc.

Only one I know...not sure just how good it is!!

Thanks board![/QUOTE]Best option is to buy a local pre-paid SIM card. There are several mobile shop, in the Marriot building or in the airport for example.

Bbois, try to unlock your mobile phone (ask your operator or go back to the shop where you bought it). After 6 months, it should be possible without any fare.
Or maybe your mobile could accept a polish Oracle SIM card (ask Orange UK). It costs 59 PLN with a 20 PLN credit. One minute is about 0.3 - 0.5 PLN (depending on the time of the day and which network you are calling). Additional credit can be purchased 5, 25, 50 and 100 PLN.
No passport or ID is required, privacy safe !

I bought an Orange Pre-paid SIM card at a store in the subway underpass near the Marriott Hotel for 20 PLN with 20 PLN airtime credit. So the SIM card was basically free.

Just watched a news item about someone who went on holiday, used their £30 monthly contract phone ( 200 x net work mins etc) to phone their friends as they would normally....ended up with a bill for £540!!

Will check with my contract people via orange...its only a new phone...so may not be possible....

I have written a number of reports on cel phones but heres some more :

Roaming fees in a foreign country sometimes reach 2 English pounds a minute, that is for incoming and outgoing calls, so do the math.

Before going on vacation check with your mobile company that your phone can accept SIM cards from other companies.

If it is "locked" most countries have stores that can "unlock" the phone making it possible to use SIM'S from any company anywhere in the world.
Your mobile company will most probably do it but they will charge you a fee.They generally don't advertise that phones are locked but will always try to sell so called packages if they know that you are travelling.

Buying a local SIM card will save the roaming charges and any currency that is weak against the $ will assure inexpensive calls, local and overseas - seems like the $ has gone to hell though !

Cel phone charges in the USA and Britian are expensive as it is but if you paid the roaming charges even in a place like poland your bill would most probably be double or triple. If you are on all expenses paid business trip or vac then great but there are not a huge number of people with that kind of status.

THere are a couple of small phone stores in the underpass at the (new) Novotel which is at the junction of Jerozolimskie and Marshalkowski (the two main thoroughfares in Warsaw so you can't miss it!) that can unlock UK phones. I had one done there a year or two ago.

ALternatively try a google search. I found a free programme that gave me an unlock code for a Nokia that was locked to O2.

I have been using a sim card I bought from PLUS operator, the shop is located at the feet of the Marriott tall building near the sports bar.

I had about the same buying experience you reported.
Afterward I found rather expensive both the calling and also the smsing.
I had to recharge 2 times in 4 days.

Well I’m not sure about the use I did of this sim card but if anyone, with polish skills feels in the will it might be useful having more accurate piece of information about the provider prices.

Re Phones: I did the same thing as suggested here, went to the underpass of the central train station, lots and lots of small mobile phone stores who will unlock you phone for a small fee. I always use a local sim card (ERA in my case) and sending sms's is very cheap.

Re match.com etc: I use two websites: plentyoffish.com and okcupid.com, both are non paying, free messaging, no limits whatsoever. However they are very US focussed, but still also have women from central europe. I have made a few contacts with girls from Hungary and Poland that way, too early to tell if the contacts will lead to anything. My experience is that you just have to continue to write to them, almost none will reply to your first message. Use your literary skills to send a new message every few days or so, something funny and not too overtly sex oriented. In this way I got some of them replying, but as mentioned too early to tell if it works. The one in Budapest seems to be going well though, so who knows, I will be there in a few weeks and will see what happens.

I am also in touch with some women in germany, and so far that has been a lot easier, no idea why.

If you know of any local sites, please let me know the url's. Would like to try them as well.

I did try some polish chat sites ones, but as my polish is very rudimentary when I speak it, no way I can write a proper text message and poltran etc will not give you a very correct translation either, so you never know what the polish "result" of your translation is. The way a word is conjugated in Poland is key to its' meaning so without sufficient knowledge to conjugate properly, what you are trying to say does not make a lot of sense.

The other suggestion is to go visit websites specifically for expats, maybe you can find these through the embassy websites, or the bi-national cultural associations. They normally have message boards as well, and you might be able to make some expat friends, get introductions to get-togethers, etc and find non-pro's that way. Worked for me one time in Budapest as well, had a nice couple of evenings with a english girl, great fun, great lay.

The phone is unlocked, and the SIM card gets on the network. However it says "unregistered" when I try to dial a number, and no one seems to be able to help me.

Any Ideas?
