I litteraly and chicas on the left and right tryng to pull me in their direction. The chief had to really and truly walk downstairs just go get a breather. But your commander and chief luvs the girls so I had to give them what they wanted. Lolol. Every chicas I wld talk to would tell me all the chicas were looking for me. I'm laughing like wow. Have to lov SOSUA. And oh, that crazy chica from the beach from earlier would follow me around and try to tell every chica that I was her man and she did not care bc she loved me so much. Lololoo. The chief was getting very angry but I really had to laugh bc the shyt was funny
At the end of the night I settled for a cute chica. Probably around 7. We go back to the room and do our do. She was just ok. She was almost a dead fish until the chief stuck it in her. I didn't like that bc I like for the chica to be anxious to please the chief. LOL

First of all I want to say I am in awe of your knowledge, guidance , and openness you have with newbies to the D.R. As well to newbies to mongering in general.

I have just a few short questions.
1. As a newbie, fat, non Spanish speaker, I have gathered that the best way to ease into this is go the Sosua -BB route.
2. Any ISG members discount/upgrades at BB's?.
3. A man tour?
4. How much to fly between Santa Domingo and POP?
5. What about small gifts for the WG's , Tee shirts from Texas,key chains or what do you think would “grease the wheels”?
6. Cheep way to get a local phone?.
Any other quick advice would be great and I thank all of you in advance

Certainly I liked it a lot - though I do speak some Spanish. That being said, my next DomRep trip will be part Sosua, part BB's.
BB's does not, to my knowledge, offer "discounts/upgrades" to ISG members. But their regular prices are, IMHO, [i]very[/i] reasonable. Plus, their food is good, their beer is cold, and I was able to coach the bartender to make a very decent caipirinha (well, caipiRONha, as they had no cachaca).
The Man Tour is pretty good for a newbie, I think. At any rate I enjoyed it. Ed is an expat American who is fluent in Spanish and has lived in PP for some years. He drives you around to the "hot spots" of Puerto Plata, or Sosua if you prefer; he "covers your six" as necessary, helps negotiate with the chicas, and gives you a decent introduction to the night-life. I didn't take quite so full advantage of the Tour, as I was going scuba-diving early the next morning; but I felt I got my money's worth. (My report: [post]1034724[/post])
SDQ-POP flights, I haven't got a clue. I flew American from Miami straight into POP. No doubt DFW-MIA-POP would be about the same.
Chica gifts? I'd be thinking more on the line of items slightly more "personal" than Texas T-shirts or especially keychains. ... You know, swim caps might be nice - a lot of them spend their afternoons in the pool, they spend quite a lot on having their hair done, and something that would help them keep their hair nice could be quite welcome.
I've heard that the Claro outlets are pretty good for inexpensive phones. Any unlocked GSM phone should work, though; just put in a local SIM card, buy some phone-time for it, and you'd be good to go....

Speaking absolutely no Spanish can make things a little difficult. If you live alone, you can usually change the cable television settings so that you can see subtitles in English or Spanish on you television (depending what language they are speaking) or watch DVD movies that offer Spanish subtitles, is a way to learn some Spanish somewhat painlessly.
Learn a few words such as: Cuanto (how much). You don't need to speak Spanish to have fun in Dom Rep, but knowing some basic Spanish words for mongering will be useful.
Claro and Orange are the two biggest cell phone companies. I have never used Orange. Claro has phone shops in every town. A cheapy ZTE brand cell phone with 100 pesos in minutes included costs about 500 pesos at Claro.
Blackbeards is getting excellent reviews.
Sosua is fairly easy. If you stay at New Garden Hotel more than likely you will meet fellow mongers who may be able to help you out with translations and advice on the ground.
Any gift you may want to give is usually appreciated by the chicas.
Some guys bring chocolate to share with the chicas, or Baileys alcohol.
Plenty of big guys in Dom Rep. Plenty of big guys with fine chicas in Dom Rep.
You may want to split your time between Blackbeards and Sosua, maybe do the first three nights at Blackbeards and then move to Sosua for your last three nights.

There has been and may still be small plane service once or twice a day but it's expensive and probably doesn't coordinate well with your flights. You can take a bus from Santo Domingo and be in Sosua in 4 or 5 hours (including 45 minutes in the cab to get to the station).
Little feminine gifts like cute panties (which can be a buck or two at discount stores), lipsticks, perfume.
A cheap gsm phone with an hour of time was about 500 pesos complete in the box with charger last time I was there (less than $15). It's good to use a cheap phone, an Iphone can get you robbed. If you bring a phone from home leave it in the safe. Many chicas are at any given time phoneless and the your cheap phone makes a very desirable gift on departure to such a needy chica (she can be expected to show more gratitude for a 500 peso phone if she needs one than for the 500 pesos themselves). I think most low end models will text, and that's often a better option than trying to speak bad spanish over the phone (which it seems to me is much harder than speaking in person where you can see their reaction and gesture.)
Slightly better models you buy unlocked GSM on ebay can earn major credit as a last day gift with fresher chicas (though not likely the ones at BBs or Classicos). To some chicas fresh from the campo a phone like that is only earned with days of anything you want, anytime you want it, Papi.
All I can Say is WOW, I am ready to go and I think I'll know what I'm doing.

Again thanks guys...you rock[/QUOTE]Just the fact they did not say RTFF says a lot for the guys on the DR forum. I personally appreciate the new or fresh information over a year old post which may no longer apply.
I know Mr. GoGo would like to see more new people post but it is hard to help a person if you have only been to the DR a couple of times yourself and some of these guys could be travel writers rather than mongers so it is hard for a less experienced person to like they can contribute.
I would like to join DownTower in showing my appreciation to the main contributers to this board and hope some day I to can share my experiences with newbies.

I thought the diving was pretty good. Of course, Hispaniola is a volcanic island - there's enough runoff that you don't get the "gin-clear" waters of a coral island like the Caymans or Cozumel. The reefs are quite healthy, although you will see the occasional few bleached-out soft corals (they look like a bare tree in the winter). I didn't see any really big fish, but the usual suspects were all around - parrotfish, triggerfish, sergeant-majors, a few lionfish (that should be speared!), the occasional "interesting character" (once a semi-buried ray, once a small spotted moray) and plenty of the smaller ones that hide out in the soft corals like sparrows in a tree.
I bring my own equipment because I'm used to it and I like it the way I have it set up. For my BC, I use a Transpac harness with Trek wings and integrated weight pockets - I won't find [i]that[/i] in a shop's rental gear, will I? And my regulator is a "semi-Hogarthian" setup, with a 7-foot hose for my primary (I wrap it around me, bandolier-style) and a bungie necklace to keep my octo around my neck. I tell my buddies that if they need air, just grab my primary out of my mouth.
Blackbeard's dive excursions are handled by Diwa Dominica; their shop is in Puerto Plata, across the highway from the Brugal Rum warehouse, but they truck you to Sosua Bay for their diving excursions. They have a "six-pack" panga for the dives; no shelter aboard, so bring a hat and maybe sunscreen. Two guides and three to five customers - a very good ratio.
Next trip, I'll go to Sosua the first few days, to be next-door to the diving, then finish up with a couple of "deco days" with Barba Negra. "John from NJ" recommended Scuba Elite in Sosua, and I want to give them a try; otherwise I might meet Diwa at the Sosua boat-ramp. (Northern Coast was a cattle-car dive operation, according to John....)
We aren't going to the Dom Rep for the diving, but it's a nice bonus to dive in warm water and it's a "licit" excuse for the trip.
