I am still used to 9 $ for a taxi, 7 $ for the beige airport dedicated tuktuk an 4-5 $ for a tuk tuk just outside the airport. Taxi might have A/C but if is working. Looks like they never clean the filters from those very old cars. Arriving in rush hour with AirAsia flight from DMK I always prefer a open A/C tuktuk as it is way quicker to riverside than any car. Not for the price. And haggling them down to 4 dollar but pay 5 always do them smile and thank you sir, as long as they are not too lazy to take my suitcase to the hotel doorsteps.

I operate on the basis of trying to remove EVERY possible thing that might go wrong or delay me.

Photos are required in Laos and Mongolia, and you need at least one photo if you extend your visa in either place.

I always have at least 6 with me when I travel. Last time entering Laos I passed over a pic that was probably 12 months old (I had very short hair then).

The immigration officer looked at it, then at me, then back again and said with a smile "You look much older now". He let me through.

The guys flying in for a quickie don't have time to negotiate or even learn the local prices. And us that prefer to stay for a month or two suffer these guy's inflationary behavior. After living here for five years, here are some tips and recommendations.

1. Phnom Penh bars and girls are NOT the same as in Thailand or the Philippines.

2. Around 60-80% of the girls in the bars will go out with some customers.

3. Maximise your chances of getting the girl of your choice by being presentable. Smelly, badly dressed, drunk, aggressive guys will lose out.

4. If possible, learn a few words of Khmer, the local language. Just Hello, thank you, you're beautiful etc. It will make a lot of difference to how the girls treat you.

5. Suggested technique: buy the girl one drink, chat to her, establish a connection. Then ask if she sometimes goes out with customers.

6. If she says yes, you know you have a good chance (but still not guaranteed! If she says no, you know where you stand and can either cut your losses and move on, or keep drinking just for her company.

7. Prices. Always a controversial topic. Currently in the main hostess bars they range from $25-60 short time, and $40-100 long time, depending on the bar, the girl, how much she needs the money, and whether she likes you or not (refer to points 3 and 4 above).

8. If a girl quotes you $100 for short time, it's her polite way of saying she doesn't want to go out with you. Move on. (except at Darling Darling where that's the standard starting price).

12. The riverside road near what Phnom, street 63, the road near the Japanese Friendship bridge all have street girls for $5-20 short time.

13. Some bars, notably in streets 104 and 136, will try to pad your bills with extra drinks or incorrect addition. Beware.

14. Try not to be walking alone in darker streets after 2 am if you are very drunk, or you risk being mugged by ladyboys or guys on motorcycles.

The bars have a different 'flavour' in each street.

Streets 104 and 136.

Filled with tourist-focussed bars. Very loud music, girls often aggressively seeking ladydrinks, bill padding, a general in-your-face attitude.

In street 136 try Corner Bar 136, VVIP, Xanadu, Helicopter bar, 69 bar and Sweet Lemon bar. Candy bar or Butterfly bar if you want some ladyboys. In street 104 try Rose bar (40+ girls), Airforce and Rouge bar. Oscars has live bands each night.

Street 130.

More upmarket bars with some great girls and a more relaxed feel.

Honeypot bar, Angry Birds bar, and Loco bar are the best of the bunch. Happy Times and Simply the Best may be worth a quick look. Two new small bars, X-Dream, and Black & White seem friendly.

Street 118.

Fairly ordinary bars here. At The Office bar is the best. It has girls dancing on the inside balconies at weekends and a smart interior. Island bar for ladyboys.

Street 110.

More ordinary bars. Double D bar can be a lot of fun sometimes and Pretty Woman has some cute Japanese looking girls inside. Happy Girls and Red Lion the best of some very average bars.

Street 51.

Lots of small unappealing bars. Cheap girls, cheap drinks.

Shanghai bar (50+ girls, some live music, upmarket) and Black Cat bar are both good.

Is there a best time to hit these popular bars like Rose Bar, Angry Bird, Loco, Honey Pot, etc. Just making sure I'm hitting them at the right time since when I went these did not have good lineups.

I was pulled in by a cute girl to Candy and Uncle V met me there. He was so disgusted! Agree it's scary there but my girl (not a ladyboy) wasn 20 and pretty cute. I say that "it doesn't matter" because it seems that not a lot of girls get barfined based on my observations. Unlike in Bangkok or Pattaya, where you need to be there before a certain time to catch the hotter looking ones. What I do know is that some girls work different shifts. A few of the hotter ones I have met both start their shift at 10 PM at I think Xanadu and Best 136 bar.

You might look for a girl at Butterfly across from Candy. She looks like a bit like a ladyboy because she is tall, got tits and ass and slim waisted. But I know her cousin personally and she is definitely not a ladyboy. Name is Akeng. But not sure if she uses that name in the bar.
