If you thinking of conquering Rio in one trip its not going to happen. The first trip with all the pretty young ladies is going to throw you off any plans either well intentioned or not. My best advice is DO NOT GO ADVENTURING YOUR FIRST TRIP. Pick a nice safe brand name hotel and selectively pick places from Bubbas and Spertos Guide that they themselves say are not that shady.
Until you get a feel of the culture its not safe for you to bring a GDP back to your room. Get you legs under you and the rest will flow. You will still have a great time and meet some chicks you may think you want to marry (don't Do it) Let the city come to you. You cant plan out a Picaso and you damn sure cant plan out Rio. 4x4 and Monte Carlo are going to throw you for a loop all by themselves as the sheer volume of sexy big bundas. I've done my fair share of reading but, of course, there is no substitute for boots on the ground, so to speak. I've got a simple question: What is the best kind of clothes to wear where you will be comfortable and "not out of place" so to speak. And, I'm so appreciative of the many contributions from those who have been there (or live there) and provided so much information. I hope to contribute.

Simple slacks or jeans (No shorts even in the summer) , knit shirt with a collar and decent sneakers will keep you from standing out as a tourist when you are out and about. To carry your stuff a smalll backpack will do the trick. Try not to have really recognizable brands that will call the attention of the locals in your directiion. Definitely don't walk around wearing bling, you might as well walk around with money hanging out of your pockets because some clown may want to take a shot. It is just like any big city anywhere: Beware of your sorroundings, have a plan, don't go anywhere staggering drunk and you will do fine. Works everywhere from Copa to Lapa to Vila Mimosa. I wouldn't carry a pack. I know some guys travel with a DSLR camera, dildos, buttplugs, Victoria's Secret lotions for girls, even towels! Yeah, almost everyone is impressed. My first Brasil experience was magical, but in Sampa not Rio. That last question is the reason..cause the girls can make you wonder what they are going to do, and why.
