Some girls asked me to keep quiet when they were on the phone with family and friends while others want me to talk to their family. Generall I avoid this but how to say no. I know you mean well so thank you for sharing your thoughts in this. I have been more than 25 times in the Philippines and spent years and not months of accumulated time there. It is an Australian company and my credit card is from the USA.

Of course the people in Ghana run the scam. Whenever I am there and try to log on to one of the cupids they automatically block me unless I log on using a proxy. And they will not remove the block until I leave that country.

I used Filipina Cupid while I was in Phil and had no problems with it being blocked. I also used my Yahoo Messenger a few times while I was in Phil and when I returned to USA I was blocked out of my YM. They said my account was recently used at another location. Since I never set up a way to reset my password I can no longer access my YM. Unfortanately I lost a few good contact.

To a certain extent, the pap that passes for popular culture in the US isn't new; it's just assumed new forms. This is after all, the country that invented the sit com and the soap opera. For me however, it's all in the company you keep, and the fact is that in the US or the UK it's extremely easy to find multiple sub cultures that are engaging, inhabited by thoughtful, interesting people, and perhaps that's the major difference. Here in the Philippines, there simply aren't any equuivalents, or if there are I haven't found them. Maybe it's because in the West, and in Japan and China, there's a huge corpus of aesthetic culture that includes art, music, literature and philosophy and that's passed on and added to from generation to generation. There's no parallel here, nor are there anu viable indigenous cultural outlets for expressing them. Try finding a good jazz club for example, in Manila, or a major art museum, or decent theatrical performances. Try finding equivalents to the Louvre, or the Met, or the Tate Gallery.

Perhaps the difference is one of degree. That is, despite the agreed vacuity of American popular culture, plentiful alternatives exist for the large minority that seeks alternatives. To me, the "whys" of the situation don't matter. I don't care if the absence of cultural alternatives was caused by colonialism, a poor educational system, corruption or other factors; it's the absence that bothers me.

I know at least 7 said I was the first foriegner they had met, with that buter wouldn't melt in their mouth look. The youngest onme, at 18 said I was the 4th foriegner she had met.
