We call barriadas what the dominicans describe as "barrios" which are the urban areas where poor people live. I have been in a couple barrios. Last October I spent almost a day in a barrio house. The house was shared by two families. No privacy there. If you have sex in a room noises can be clearly heard from outside. Metal tin roof (we called it planchas de zinc). The most peaceful moments are when there is no electric power which in that barrio is 20 hours per day. DR Electric power company divides the city areas in different categories: Zone A gets 24 hours per day electricity, in those areas almost every one pays their electric bills. Zone B gets 20 or 22 hours and so on. Most barrios get from 0 to 6 hours of electric power per day. Once the electric power returns you can hear the radios and televisions from the houses around the one you are. No electric power also means cold water, very cold. I took a shower with cold like freezer water. No tiles or sink in the bathroom. The toilet was new courtesy of my favorite chica earnings. No urban zoning. There was a colmadon almost in front of my chica home. Beauty parlors, pawnshops, bars etc. In the same street mixed with residential homes. Lots of people in the street while no electric power. I felt safe in the area I was. We walked 15 minutes to a Car wash at 10 pm. Live perico ripiao music. Local crowd with lot of pretty girls. My girl explained one of the reasons girls wear very tight clothing is that because the do not have electric power most of the time if they wear tight clothing they will look like if it was pressed. Most homes they do not have an iron. Barrios are safer than public housing projects but there are some that are very dangerous.

So barrio is an urban area unlike what I was thinking. That it was half country. Semi developed roads, no piped water and stand alone single thatched roof or corrugated metal roof houses in the midst of banana plantations. I now feel like Levis Strauss. Would like to go and see one to begin with. A girl asked me to go to Bonao where she is from but it did not pan out last time but I presume Bonao being a small town, would not quite show me the urban barrio.

The insight into tight clothing was interesting. In general, I found women in D. R always dressing smartly. At least in the cities I have visited which are sosua, puerto plata and santiago. Contrast that to India where I grew up, where as a poor country, often times you see poor people dressed in hand me down clothing. This to say that you do notice the difference which in the D. R (if it is poor) , I could not make out so far.

This summer, one late evening I dropped a girl to where she lives. Close to Boston and it was a somewhat "distracting experience", more than anything because of so many people milling about on the sidewalks even at 11 PM.

I agree completely with your thoughts of treating people with respect but I absolutely do not want to dazzle. Once in Beijing, many moons back when China was not so wealthy, I had an interesting experience. I hired a guy as an interpreter and he wanted to use the bathroom in my suite. I gave him the key without a thought and I stayed at the lobby bar at the Great Wall Sheraton. When I returned, the bathroom was flooded. The embarrassed man and I unfortunately got upset, explained he got drawn into taking a shower as well (and one can perhaps read a lot into that) and then did not know the mechanism of all the gizmos there so. Looking back I should have brought him to the place telling him to ask me in case he needed help but like a dolt I assumed things.

I just want to treat a person at a level that she / he is comfortable with and your point that in many cases the women in the DR might frequent fancy places more than I do is well taken.

Speaking of fancy places, I kind of linked it to another discussion somewhere here where it was said girls enjoy eating if you offer that even at odd hours. So I wondered if filling your stomach is not the priority compared to how hip the location is. I have on several occasions now, eaten at the department store restaurants in the D. R and found food to be good, clean and in general served in a nice though not fancy ambiance. I also on one location have eaten in a place in puerto plata. Serving local food under blowing fans which too would draw me again.

I also do not get to see situations where a 14 year old is a mother. As I had described in my conversation with the mechanic where I was having my car checked. The irony of it is that it appears to me that I left US to travel to the D. R only to re-discover my own place.

I'd like to know, given how much crime your read about in the paper over there, and how creative criminals are (they'll pretend to be cops,

Use a bus full of people to rob passengers, taxi drivers in cahoots with muggers, etc) how safe is it hitting the Casas and strip clubs in

SD? I've been to Cuba a few times and never had any problems even late at night, but I know DR is a lot worse in terms of crime.

I would figure that we would be prime targets over there, not only because we're foreign, but also you need money to go to places like 305.

Has any one heard of any scams involving these places with criminals waiting outside or something. Can you walk around Gazcue at night.

Or is it something that the taxi has to leave right at the door? Any of you guys heard anything.

Also, what about street girls: are they just crack-hoes or can you find some lookers on the avenues: Would a taxi be OK for this, or could you go on foot?

I'm planning on going next month and will be staying in the Zona Colonial, which I've heard is generally safe; any dangers and annoyances to look out for?

Free wifi, free breakfast, small pool. Guests get complimentary admission to the Body Shop Athletic gym, which is a few blocks away and has a larger pool.

I was told guests cannot use the pool at the sister hotel the nicholas ovando. MGallery offers 3 nights for the price of two for certain dates for the hotel frances, with breakfast, rate using that special is about $87US per night. I was told the hotel is not chica friendly unless the chica checks in with you or you give her name at check in.

A large outdoor market under what I believe is the express part of Avenida 27 de Febrero, just north of zona colonial. Clothes, shoes, fruit etc. Also lots of people selling clothes on calle duarte which runs perpendicular to avenida 27 de febrero and the next parallel street going east. Traffic moves very slow near there with lots of gua guas.

An ISG member asked about buying Patron Tequila at the airport in Santo Domingo. At the duty free shop for departing passengers, Patron Anejo (750ml) was priced at $50US.

Colonal zonal is my place in the DR. Tourist are sacred. No one with good sence will bother you. I had a barber there who over charged me. [I] Reported him to the tourist police 15 minutes later he was in hand cuffs. They take tourist safety very serious. The street walkers I saw were ok. No real stunners but in the eye of the beholder however there are plenty around if you look. If you spreak alittle spanish you will be find. Visit Grand / Pacos for a meal. About10 chicas work out of it. Worth a sit down. E.

Why would we like to see pic of a hotel / market / pool?

I have done over 20 trips to santo domingo and never had a problem walking around gazcue, all hours of the day and night.

The two spots in DR where I have had people pull knives on me were in boca chica and sosua. Reading some posts from the north shore (puerto plata, sosua) seems there are a few scams involving mongers in that part of DR.

Always know where your money is. I have been in casas in santo domingo many times, fun having a group of chicas maul you like you are a star. However, I don't trust all of them and I like to know my money is secure in my pants or in a shirt pocket. Don't get too drunk.

Usually the same street guys and the same shoe shine kids on the same streets in gazcue. Tip a few pesos or be friendly with some of them and they might watch your back. Be nice, but don't be a pushover, some of the shoeshine kids can be rude. I gave one a 20 peso bill and he complained that he wanted 100 pesos.

Lots of policia nacional and politur in zona colonial and gazcue. If you don't drive a car you really should not be bothered by the policia nacional. I don't walk around with huge sums of cash, even though I have never had a problem in santo domingo.

Lock up and secure any valuables in your hotel room, especially if you bring streetwalkers back to your room.

The chicas I took from 305 were nice and no problem. Girls House, Sky High, Lapsus, La Parada I would be more careful about. Satin Dolls I know the owner and other workers there, so if I ever take a chica out of Satin Dolls, I doubt I would have a problem.

There are more venues; Foxys, Baby Dolls, Playboy Palace, Cafe Cita Bar, Casa de Modelos, Casa Theresa, Casa Azul, GBP, Club MC, Penthouse, Pink Pony, the Mansion, Dream House, Ejecutivo, Gran Paradise Massage and others. Freelancers and streetwalkers can be found in different areas of santo domingo.

Jao is usually more forthcoming than most with a bunch of details that can be useful and he does it on his dime and time. Besides, looking for sex is an adventure in the DR (unlike hitting the strip clubs I.
