A post several pages back talked about the body rub place at the Seohyeon metro stop so I was in the mood and thought I'd try it out. The directions were spot on. Take the number 2 exit and it's right across the street on the 3rd floor. The previous poster had mentioned the price at 99, 000KW. The price that was quoted me was 89, 000KW. There was something else on the menu on the same line that was 112, 000KW but I couldn't make it out. I was led into a dressing room where I disrobed, showered and then was put into shorts and led into a massage room. This table actually had the hole for your face. I had a tremendous 70 minute massage by a reasonably young and attractive but somewhat dour young lady and on the flip there was no HE to be had. The Waygook Mongerer's Guide - Glass House Districts
waygook is the korean word for anyone who is not of korean descent who happens to be in korea.
i am finishing my multi-year study of korea's mongering places soon. after this sometimes fun adventure, the final equation is unless you are stranded in the korea like myself, it is likely better whack off and save your money until you can afford a ticket to somewhere like the philippines or thailand. not to say that that prostitution is not available in abundance here, but cultural and economic realities render the experience less than satisfactory in my opinion. it is not that korean hookers aren't beautiful and professional or that there aren't also russian, pinoy, and other nationalities of babes on the market. it is more that all prostitutes here inevitably succumb to the male korean morays, inhibitions, stigmas and styles of doing things. aside from itaewon in seoul and texas street in busan, the mongering scenes of korea are purposefully designed to cater to korean males exclusively.
mongering in korea is one past time where "fitting in" is a double edged sword. i have cobbled together some very rudimentary korean language capabilities that serve me well enough but i definitely do not 'fit in' standing 180+ cm and 115 kg with light skin and hair. if you go out for the bar scene to hook up with a korean college coed or business woman, being non-korean does have its benefits. educated women expect that korean men are set in their ways, struggling to hold onto a subserviant social order for women. therefore, non-korean males offer both alure of the exotic, but also, to corrupt a well-known acronym on this blog, a more "bfe." as i am happily settled in my home life, i am never looking for more than a 2 hour long relationship. in those dating / bar scenes, i have experienced where the woman (korean or not) that you hook up turns into a fatal attraction remake. it is amazing how good such women are at finding you when you do not want to be found. thus, i prefer not to risk that happening and stick to the professionals, no pun intended.

the most easily understandable format of korean prostitution is the glass house area. i hate to say 'like in amsterdam' since there are some big differences. however, the idea of big window storefronts with one or two girls in each window is the same. most of these storefronts are well lit up with white and red hues and there is often a certain hair salon feel (although the only people ever using the equipment are the working girls themselves). the front of the store is a shallow room and the beds are hidden in the back. these rooms are usually little more than a closet with a bed but i have been to an occasional one that is really well decked out with furntiure, porn on tvs, and even homey decorations. the established price is 70k won (about usd62) for the glass house districts. if i said the prices were government controlled,"it would be like saying the korean government controls this and that could make authorities want to hunt me down. however, prices are clearly posted on documents that look like government permits and are usually framed and mounted prominently on a wall for all to see (of course, in korean for koreans).
the posts i read always caution that the police will look for any reason to arrest a non-korean if they are caught in these areas. after all, you are exposing what koreans prefer to keep secret. this is another uncomfortable truth of korea, there are a host of common outlets for korean prostitutes that non-koreans are not supposed to know about. i have never had anything but positive experiences with the korean police since these are coveted jobs for those who do it professionally and the rest are just mandatory service conscripts dressed in police uniforms. they are just poor kids serving as guards and they do not pro-actively enforce laws. i noticed that a couple times i did get more attention from a passing police car in such areas but i just acted like i was cutting through the area on my way to somewhere else, not looking at the girls, and they passed me by.
lastly, i will give maps and pointers on getting to the three (now two) locations and all have easily accessible public parking lots i have also identified in case you want to drive. all also have a landmark department store in the same area. if you do not want to drive or take the metro, asking a taxi to take you to any of these landmark stores in those areas (if you say that much in korean) is a third way to get there and keep your true destination obscured. since the metro is my usual method, i give more detailed instructions on how to walk out to get you to the proper area.
monger synopsis of 588 (open to cars, including occasional police cruisers)
i am attaching a pdf map and directions for your reference. cheongnyangni 588 ("oh pal pal") is perhaps the most well known of the glass house districts in seoul. located on line 1 (or a little less conveniently via line 4) .588 is located next to the lotte department store in cheongnyangni and it is actually a decent sized mixed-use neighborhood mixed in the glass fronts. some of these are open in the day but generally the lights generally only come on at dusk. there are a good number of eating establishments and food markets right outside the zone so it could also make for a good social studies / window shopping walk about if you aren't wanting to take the plunge right then. like the others, there is a main concentration and then a few more rep001tered close but outside the lines on the map. as you can see by the map, this is a large area and likely over 50 store fronts in the lined area to choose from. if you look korean.
if you are not asian and still want to absolutely guarantee a successful outing, your 588 options are dramatically curtailed. but viable. looking at the outline, you and see the little panhandle sticking up behind the big lotte department store and mall (another decent option for a walk about until 8 pm). if you get out at exit 5 of line 1, you just follow the traffic around the side of the department store where there is an above ground parking garage (convenient if you just want to drive there). walking to the end of that street with the lotte on your left and the parking lot on your right, you'll start to see a couple of elderly adjumas and they will also see you. by the time you get to where they are sitting, they'll already be vying for your attention, some more aggressively than others. don't worry, they are not the talent.
they usually have rudimentary english and will guide you down the alley behind lotte instead of towards the main 588 area. in that alley there are about 7-10 more traditional looking shops that are not lit up. the adjuma will guide you in and you usually have the choice of 2 or more korean women. these are definitely not the pick of the litter, but beggars can't be choosers here and these women are certainly passable. even downright sexy if you precede your visit with a pitcher or two. here is where your korean language skills will be put to the test. but hopefully, with these instructions, you should be able to bluff your way through the process.
you want to make sure to pick your girl very clearly by nodding and gesturing to the one you want until there is a clear understanding visible. you also should not be shy, take your time and make sure you look around slowly since sometimes one or more of the girls could be in the back cleaning the room and you end up passing them by. the same adjuma will likely guide you to the not classy, but passable room and will take your money. in some other places, it might be the adjuma works off of tips but, in those cases, she will usually ask for the tip before you go in the back. these westerner accessible places are also generally not 70k won but 50k won since i guess these women are "giant cock tainted" but the whole seamier-seamier side of this can also mean that the adjumas might negotiate a higher price and get to keep the change. as long as it is not above 70k won, you can feel you aren't being too ripped off.
the seamier-seamier part also kicks in once you have your pants down. the pros in these places are older and many have put in years of service. this means they are usually going to demand condoms midway into the session. they can and will use that segway to drive up their price by asking for a tip up front. this can also be followed by the occasional second attempt to part you from your money when you are hard by saying your time is running short and for another 50k won they can do everything for as long as you want. frankly, this is a bit of a conundrum since in 99% of these cases, the establishments are honest and the 50k won was for you to cum. thus they rarely will argue your time is up if you haven't reached the normal conclusion. however, the girls will try to suggest that could happen if you do not extend. i recommend taking your chances and not paying for additional time. as for the tip, i focus on the 70k won price and keep my total outlay of funds to 80k won. if the up front fee is 50k then i will tip more.

as always, i am attaching a map and guidance. like the others, the gireum rld (more commonly known as miari) is near another big department store landmark. this one is the hyundai department store in gireum but it is across a major street (dong-so-moon-ro to be exact) from where you want to be. miari / gireum is a more peaceful location to monger since it is walled off from traffic with entrances to the area all featuring the telltale car-flap type curtains that can be seen at the parking lots of the many love motels (for a later analysis). gireum station is on line 4 (light blue line) and the easiest exit is exit 10. as you reach the top of the stairs, just between the exit and the building in front of you is a blue plastic awning covered set of stairs which is the walkway to the other side of the area. i usually take that walkway to the other side where you come to the giant elevated freeway above you; the parking garage entrance to your right; and the flap-covered entrance is just to your left.
first of all, you'll notice this area is a nest of darkly lit little alleys with a few little stores but the lion's share of the buildings are dedicated to the oldest profession. although gireum has some glass houses, i prefer this area since it is more the bordello style where the insides are not easy to see and bright lights do not single you out as someone who does not belong. i have never had to knock since the mamsan will usually poke her head out to see who you are.
in some cases, she might not say anything and pull her head back inside. when that happens, she is checking with the girls about if any would not mind servicing the giant cock lurking outside (if you don't look asian). since this area is not open to cars, concerns the girls have about being marked as ruined are not as important here as it seems at 588. the stereotype that any guy who is not an asian is john holmes, still persists, but professionals usually are not scared of penises in general and you feel a little more welcome here.

as of february 2012, the yongsan glass house district is no more. like so much of seoul, it has fallen victim to real estate speculators and has been flattened. korea is about to enter a real estate bust (already in it but they are keeping it quiet hoping it too shall pass). i spoke to a company who was one of the few in the area who had yet to escape the wrecking ball and he explained that samsung e&c had spent tons of money to buy up the land around the base since it was moving. however, funds for the move have become scarce and it looks like the usa army base will be there for some time into the next decade at least.
the closing of the glass houses on the west side of the base have had a positive effect on the iteawon hooker hill on the east side but that's another report to come. for those who do not know, yongsan-gu is a big district in the center of the city. in the center of it is the huge yongsan us army garrison so the non-military portion is two strips running along the the east and west sides of the base and westerners are abundant in both. on the west side, where the glass houses used to be is the yongsan electronic market and the i-park mall with an e-mart. the e-mart offers free parking if you also buy stuff in their store which was never too hard to do. iteawon, the ex-pat relaxation zone, is on the east side of the base, and there are russian bars, philippino bars, african restaurants, and other international places everywhere.
i will not dwell on this lost landmark too much but the yongsan glass houses were in a small community directly across the street from the mall. on the street were many restaurants and beer bars. in between them were the tell tale 'love hotel' style mudflaps hanging down in the entrances to the alleys. these alleys lead to one main road lined with glass houses on both sides. it was on that well lit road where you could see some of the hottest babes to rent in seoul. the fact that cars could drive through was enough to force the westerners off the main road and back into the alleys. however, the women off the major street were certainly acceptable. the prices there would range the normal $50k to 70k won. the service was usually mechanical but fun. alas, it is all gone now. i have not been able to figure out where the rest of the girls have gone, aside from the new abundance of girls on hooker hill which has driven prices down for the well-informed. watch for future reports on that as well as reports on the double barber poles and the frienship bars which i will post in the weeks to come.
