I speak Spanish very well and despite spending lots of time in Brasil over the years, I still have no where near proficient in Portuguese. That doesn't stop me from having a great time.

It still took quite a bit of dedication and practice to get to my level now in portuguese, which is very good.

I know native spaniish speakers, who after years, still struggle with portuguese.

Getting to fluency in spanish was a b..ch because it was my first language to learn after english, learning and becoming proficient in portuguese has been fun tho.

My mind was already trained and they are very similar in structure.

LOL But I can carry on a decent conversation in imperfect Spanish. I did put in some effort to learn Portugese. But I struggled. I believe maybe if I was more fluent in Spanish it might have been easier.

I'm thinking about returning to Brazil next year. But the language was a challenge. I got by on my last trip but to the OP's point, speaking the language greatly improves the experience.

Most places I walk in I do manage to get by. Many of them understand spanish including in stores, restaurants, etc. I'm mostly referring to wanting to spend a entire day or weekend with one with zero Eng as I normally do in Colombia. I was hanging out today in a lounge in Centro and a wg was on me dancing and we chatted a bit, started with basic porto then I mixed it w some Spanish and didn't have to pull Gtranslate at all. [/QUOTE]I was a French teacher. Portuguese is my third language and I learned Spanish after that. To me, none of them are any easier or harder than another. I recommend getting Pimsleur language program, buying a first year text book, large English Portuguese dictionary, and 501 Portuguese verbs from Amazon. Then buy a bunch of index cards. The 501 will teach you how to conjugate the verbs. The text book categorizes things to make it easier to learn. For instance things in a bathroom or parts of a car. Then with the Pimsleur you learn conversation and pronunciation. Make sure you get the Brazilian Portuguese program and not the Portugal one. I have been speaking Portuguese for over 20 years and still don't know what the hell they are saying in Portugal!

It was my first time so I'll post about my experience and strategy.

First off I got good advice to start at Plaza Botero. It was good advice. You will know you are there because you will see a bunch of bronze statue of fat people. Around the Plaza you will see a fat roman soldier statue. It's across from the museum of antiqua or something. Walk in that direction. You will see shops, hotels and chicas. There are also some behind the stsute I just mentioned. Seems like going rate is 50 k pesos. 10 for the room.
