The rule of "don't follow touts", as well as don't go to those shady bars in Roppongi, should be a hard-and-fast rule. I should have heeded this advice.Anyway, the PSA is this -- DO NOT GO TO AVALON IN ROPPONGI (wherever that is). I rolled the dice and followed a tout into a less than respectable place, and the night went downhill from there. Avalon charged USD 5000 on my credit card. Bonzo,It's a hard and fast rule for anyone who drinks alcohol to never take a credit card or excess cash along with you when you go out drinking. You take enough for the night and that's it. I'm not sure what led you to partake but its common knowledge here in this forum that this is a "get what you deserve" scenario when you start going along with touts who promise you things associated with drinking alcohol you're simply asking for trouble. It's not particular clubs, either. Advice taken re credit cards. However, I don't think I 'deserved' to be drugged and ripped off to the tune of $5000 plus my cash (about $500), though it's not unexpected I suppose. No shame, just a hard lesson. The drink-spiking has been in the news since March 2009 or even before. I'm surprised you didn't know. The US Embassy has been warning Americans (not sure where you're from but that doesn't matter because this pertains to all foreigners) about drink spiking. It's very well known throughout the expat community. Do a search. Ah - that's scary. I'm American, but not living in Tokyo...was just visiting friends and did zero research. Hence I suppose I was a perfect target, particularly given my "I'll try anything once" attitude. Lesson learned. Hope can prevent someone else from suffering the same thing. Still there is a good number of people that claims with the cc company and surely those corporates have list fo th egood and bad establishments.I mean, a high rate of claims should be a warning not to license those scammers with credit card payments.Evidently they do not care!

I have informed my credit card company and I'm fairly sure I won't have to pay. My company, Chase, puts the responsibility on the establishment to prove the charges, which in this case of course they will not be able to do. I agree - they have access to lists about bad establishments, and these places should have their merchant licenses revoked. It happens occasionally in China they do (get their licenses revoked). A friend with a [I]Japanese[/I] credit card wasn't so lucky. The Japanese credit card companies are very difficult to get reversals on and he is paying off a $US5000 debt. I had a hold put on my American credit card once because of a legitimate $2000 transaction which was rejected. When I contacted them about my card not working they asked if that transaction was OK. It wasn't easy saying yes. I could have got away with rejecting it.
