I have to say that this is NOT the easiest city to find things in and obviously a working knowledge of Japanese would go a long way. When I return, I will have to study harder to get more phases. I talked to a tencho a few days ago at a hotel health in Shibuya. It was a slow time and he didn't mind chatting. I asked him about gaijin and he said there are a number of considerations. First, he said many of the ladies don't like us because we take too long, whereas most Japanese men finish their business quickly and move one. Gaijin tend to take their time and seem to be trying to prolong things while Japanese men are just going in to shoot their load and be done. Any spare time is left for chatting. I think many foreigners believe it is a macho thing to last a long time. My Japanese is not great so I asked him about mine. He said mine is fine. Basically, you need what I call mid-level Japanese which means you don't need to be fluent in terms of conversation but you do need to be fluent in terms of understanding what is being said. He said that is an absolute requirement. You don't need to read kanji but you need to understand the rules. Third, he said we should not come around during busy times. It's just plain bad for business. This is common sense. Choose afternoons or mornings if they are open. Don't go at 9:00PM, for instance. Fourth, he said to come alone or with a Japanese friend. Do not come in with other foreigners. Put yourself in his place and I think this is easy to understand. It's intimidating and scary for him and his reaction is going to be to tell you all to go away.This pertains to hotel healths only in Tokyo. A regular health is a much tougher nut to crack in my experience, virtually impossible in some areas like Yokohama. I would be curious if anyone has had success with a health in Yokohama.
