I haven't looked at these, certainly I haven't tried them ... but I've wondered, too.

What's evident to me is that the PacSafe won't resist a determined effort to get at its contents, but a "surreptitious" effort - such as the one that a chambermaid, or your 'novia de la noche', might make to play Lady Light-Fingers with it - would be quite a bit more difficult. Especially if you had the drawstring cable looped and locked around a large and solidly-secured object like the bed frame - and you'd checked to make sure the object couldn't be disassembled to let a thief take the whole PacSafe and open it at leisure.

I must say I really appreciate the New Garden's digital safes! They seem quite secure, they aren't going anywhere, and it would take a lot of time to enter code after code after code in hopes of finding the magic numbers.

I have one of these but after carrying it with me for a time, I gave up trying to use it. It seems secure enough with the heavy gauge construction but my problem was finding something to secure it to. It's the only way you can be assured someone doesn't walk walk off with it. But few things in a hotel room meet those requirements. Almost everything in a room can be disassembled and one of the few relatively secure items, the toliet bowl is too large for the cable on mine.

I've been using it for years. I agree it's only as sturdy as what you attach it to. The best place I ever attached it to is a couch frame but most hotels don't have one.

I bought a few other goodies off of [url]www.coporatetravelsafety.com[/url]. You should look into a set of straps with locks attached to the buckle. People use these to attach surfboards and other things to their car roof. They would work on a dresser draw with handles.

All these things do is deter petty theft. They aren't meant to stop a planned robbery.

I have also come the conclusion that hotel safes aren't always secure as you might think. There IS a spare key floating around somewhere. I am starting to lock my valuables up in a locked bag *before putting it into a safe. This can help you from people trying to skim from your pile. If done the right way you would never know your money was being skimmed.

I got tired of having to undo the whole contraption each time I forgot to take something out or put something in. It is well designed and constructed but can be a pain in the ass for frequent use.

The best of the pacsafe products I found is the smaller fanny bag that they sell (they have two sizes). When I go to the airport, and when passing through security, I place my wallet, house keys, important documents in it, and just lock it up. It is not unusual in some places for your luggage to pass through the xray machine before you do. One time, when I arrive to Santo Domingo, passed my bag through security, and by the time they were finished checking me out the woman on the other end was trying desperately to open my fanny bag. She simply couldn't figure it out. Sometimes some of the airport workers try to steal or shake down tourists for money. There were so many complaints made to the Dominican Consulate that signs are now posted in the airports (in Spanish) about giving people money.
In the hotels, it is not just the chicas but also the workers who will take items. Even with a digital safe there is a way of overriding it (many forget their password). Anything with a key lock, believe me, someone has a copy of the key (just in case someone gets locked out). I see people use the fanny bag in the streets but I have found it to be cumbersome. What I do is anchor it inside the safe (I've done this at the Europa, New Garden, And Terra Linda.) and place original documents, airline tickets, house keys, large sums of money, and what not in there. Enternaitonal is correct in that it can sometimes be a pain to open and close Pacsafe products so to compensate I leave some money outside the fanny bag but in the safe. If someone enters the safe they will not take the contents of the fanny bag but the small sum. Pacsafe are portable, light, security, and if someone wants to break into these items they will but it is more of a deterrent. Except for maintenance the average hotel worker or chica will not carry around wire cutters or other tools to break into things.

One time I was a bike messenger in New York, a city notorious for theft of cycles. I must have called a dozen bike shops up about what would be the best lock, only to come to the conclusion (as one bicycle dealer told me) that if they wanted to steal my bike they would. I could not stop them. I went out and purchased three types of locks, needing three different tools to break. At one of my job sites I met a client who was a bicycle thief. This is what he did to make money. He entered my work area because he saw my bike. We started talking and he said that he would not steal my bike because it would take too much time. Thieves need time to steal. Slow them up or discourage them.
I recall when I was checking out Hotel Valeria I found their rules to be very strict. I hesitated and the gentleman noticed my reaction. I mentioned one story that one of the guests was staying at Hotel Valeria and one day decided to stay three days at Cabarete, with a chica. He ended up calling Valeria, since he also still staying there, and told thee owner that the chica he was with stole his camera and $300!. The hotel paid for a cab to pick him up. One can never be too safe, especially in a foreign country.
I guess the problem with all security is that it tends to be time consuming. Rarely is security nonintrusive in one form or another.

Been to DR many times, I cannot recommend Rockys, its a dump. Stay in New Garden( the new wing or Don Antonio) just google either one with DR in at end of each and there web site will come up.. New Garden is around 60 Us per night and Don Antonio is like 30.00. But New garden is much nicer.

If the guy wants ultra luxury, those accommodations can be found nearby with prices of $3,000 US per night and up.

Have been in Sosua last month, I didn't notice too many changes with october 2009. It is stille the easiest place in DR to meet pros. Non pros do exist, but the eventual price will be higher. Price range from 1500. Most girls will leave you room anyway after you came for the first time, so I dont't think there is a lot of bennefit for a long time chica, advise to speak at least some Spanish. Also if your hotel is not girlfriendly it is possible to rent some short time near merenque bar for 300 pesos.

Having worked at the airport as a baggage handler systems agent. Do not believe that they cannot open that bag. If there is security at that airport, they have the key for any & every bag. If you do not want your personal items tampered with, I suggest you carry that bag through the check point, let them check it out. This is the only way you will know that it is safe a secure. One last thing, if you see a rip on that bag. Either the xray machine did it or they got in that bag. Believe me no bag is secure!
