Ok. Since no one had any feedback on either of these two hotels, I ended up trying both. Ibis for the first 4 nights and Crown Plaza for the last five nights (on my second day here as I type this).

Ibis: Got a rate of $50 a night including breakfast. Very basic hotel, but very clean, and the staff very nice, professional and accommodating. Sits right across the street from Shopping del Sol, which is a relatively large and modern shopping mall with quite a few luxury and international brand stores. I would recommend.

Crown Plaza: Got a rate of $150. In line with standards in CP hotels elsewhere in the world. Very nice overall. Good location in the Centro. I would recommend.

I did not check for guest friendliness, but if I had to guess, I would say that both are friendly.
