You make yourself vulnerable to any kind of blackmail from pushers, hookes, police etc. Consider 2000 to 3000 Real to solve you problem if you are cought. I can think of better ways to spend this money.

I ask here because of the safety factor and honesty of this board so I appreciate your honesty and will consider it a good time to rest my lungs from my little vice. .

Weird though, I would have assumed it was not a big deal there. Hell, I even found it in Nigeria! (although it was the worst I had ever smoked!)

Any additional comments or thoughts on the the language barrier or using different guides? I am sure Don will be great from what I have read but if he is not available, I would be interested in some other folks names.

Information about the transaction will be passed on to Rio's finest, who you will meet shortly. That $R2000-$R3000 bribe, (currently $1, 278. 45. $1, 917. 72 USD) will be split among the participants. A little short on cash? They'll suggest you have friends family send it via Western Union. Any little trinkets you'll have with you, (ipod, cell phones, etc) will also be taken.

Rio's finest have used this tactic before, on other Cops! During the Pan Am games, a couple of cops from California were stopped and searched on the street for whatever reason. One of the US cops had a swiss army knife. You'd think he was heavily armed by the Rio cops reaction. The US Cops were escorted to their hotel or apartment in order to get more money. Trinkets were taken along with the money. The US cops reported it, and those Rio cops are doing time. But their friends are still out there.

Weed is prevalent in Rio, however, in the 10 yrs I've been going, I've only smelled the weed a couple of times, out by the rocks on Aporador beach and on Copa Beach late one night.

Lastly, make sure your clothes and luggage are free of that distinct smell before you travel.

I have been living in Rio since last October. Let people be. If he is an experienced traveler he will figure it out. If he goes to Ipanema Posto 9 on the weekend he will smell it everywhere. The cops were all in my pockets and my greatest fear was that they were going to plant drugs on me. When I got back in the cab, the driver asked me if I gave them any money. When I said no, he said good.


I travel all over Rio including the North Zone, and smell weed from time to time. Since Carlos' advice was to someone new to Rio, it was appropriate to warn him what would happen should he get caught and also that those selling to him might set him up.

If you're worried about language barrier, stick to Zona Sul termas (L'Uomo, Monte Carlo, Centaurus, and Solarium). Maybe T65 in Centro.

You definitely don't need a guide if all you will do is hit L'Uomo / MC / Centaurus and 65, plus tourist stuff (Sugar loaf, Christo, Jardim Botanico). Just print BubbaBoy's latest guide and some google maps, you will be fine.

S. C.9 posts, no real contribution to the board and calling other people Idiot. That is realy a member everybody is appreciating. You are now living several months in Rio? Very good, then surely you have to contribute something to this board. We all are waiting for this contribution. You have alternatively the chance to continue to insult others.

By the way, I have a life also without smoking weed. Maybe you can learn something?

I have never contributed to the Rio board so please do not hate everyone. First, on the point of smoking weed. I agree you a gringo and you try that stuff in Rio and you are putting yourself at risk. The one place no one gives you a problem is Rochina a favella outside Rio.

Now, I know some of you will say never go to the favella, but I am working with a school there and I like the favella. Maybe because I grew up poor in the states and I see a lot of the same issues that are in the states. By the way, I am working with the people there to set up a favella tour for Rochina as typical of Rio not one favella tour is run by people who live there.

Lastly, if you think it would be helpful to tell my experiences of the favella I will, but I think no one ever talks about these area's even though we all see them driving around Rio. To be honest, I have met some very hot girls from the favella that were cool and it was not all about the hustle. Again, some people did not have a choice on where they grew up. I hope that helps.

I am not sure if someone has already told you this or you have read about it but I recommend making a photocopy of your passport photo page and your visa page and get it authenticated at the nearest cartorio after you arrive. Costs about R$6 and some waiting time but lets you carry the copy around instead of the original.

If you get Don as your guide, he can tell you where the nearest cartorio is. Have a great trip!

I've been going to 4 X 4 for ever and have always enjoyed the services of many of the providers there. I've never, ever had a performer as bad as this Jacky / Jackie. I won't go into the details, but I can tell you this for sure: She is a clock watcher, too much teeth when blowing and will try every excuse to cut your session short, to include faking a door knock like she tried on me. I've been with 100's of girls there and never had someone do some crap like this, just deceitful, and awful; she is a just there for the money piece of work. I will post pictures of this beauty when I get a chance, unfortunately I had no face shots. Of course, I let the owners and the manager know about her right away. She is mulata, about 5'2", black middle of the back hair straight black, body builder / fitness model type. She is dynamic in the boite, but in the room YMMV, but I'm letting you know upfront, she is just awful, thinks she is smarter then you, dishonest, and in it for the money. Avoid her at all costs.

I would like to get down & dirty today at the above-mentioned fine establishment in Centro. However, having searched around in the forum, I am not able to get the operating hours on Saturdays. I remember vaguely having read that it is 12-6PM but unable to locate that report. An answer would be much appreciated.
