Leaving Paulaner I walked a few of the back alley's of Xintiandi, toward Va Bene, and two girls appeared at my side,"where are you from","where are you going"? One was tall and a bit large, the second was tiny and very cute. The big one asked me at first, I told her I was just walking and I turned my back to her and kept walking. Soon the tiny one was at my side,"Hi, I'm from Harbin, where are you from?". I guess they thought the big girl was not my type so their Marketing strategy was to try a different tack, send in the tiny one! Even though she was cute and probably actually my "type", I was more annoyed by the harassment than intersted in sex, so I just kept walking.

But I'm not yet finished! Maybe her friend gave her a code word or signal that Law Enforcement was coming, but she hurried away and soon was running away from me. Kind of funny. Thinking about it, it was only around 9 pm, and if a tout is "made" so early in the night they are probably busted for the remainder of the evening and can no longer work the scam, maybe not get paid. So they literally ran away in order to stick around and harrass more white guys.

So in a single walk around Xintiandi between 7 and 9 pm I was approached by seven girls, and I'm sure if I'd engaged all seven in conversation and whatever came next, I would have given up several thousand RMB with nothing in return, certainly no sex. Shame, maybe, and less self respect for having been manipulated.

All this makes me appreciate my regular provider whom I found at the Paulaner bar in Xintiandi almost three years ago. She answers the call for RMB 1, 000, no hassle, no negotiation. Certainly variety is the spice of life, so next time I need variety I will go straight to Manhattan after midnight, no weird scams, just agree on a price and enjoy the purchase.

K[/QUOTE]I'm not as seasoned as some of the others here but I've had nothing but good times at the sauna in the Merrylin Hotel Chang Hang. It's on the Pudong side but easy enough to get to from the Jin Jiang Tower. Take the metro to Century Ave and exit to Zhang Yang Road. A bit pricey (880 RMB) but worth it for an authentic Shanghai experience.

The forum was great background for a recent trip and I thought I'd write some reviews, starting with the spa / massage and "barber shops". These places are everywhere in Shanghai-four within a block of my hotel near the south train station. The BBSs have rotating barber poles out front but no hair cutting is going on inside. There's usually a couple girls in dresses in a tiny front room, and then small rooms behind or upstairs. The massage places are more established, bigger, and the girls wear uniforms. They always have the English words on their storefronts, Spa and / or Massage. So both kinds of places are very easy to spot.

No one ever spoke English, but using hand signals and pointing to the prices on their menu signs, it's easy to communicate. The girls were 6-8s, in their lower twenties to quite a bit older. Both massage places charged 200 rmb (about 35 US) for an hour oil massage, HE. They have showers. Fondling and extras depended on the place / girl. The BBSs had no showers, were straight to business, and cheaper (100-200 rmb for HJ).

The best of the bunch I can recommend without hesitation: the spa on Liuzhou Road, on the NE corner with Qinzhou South Road, next to the Huilian supermarket and two blocks north of the south Shanghai train station.
