For those of you who may be supporting a filipina in her training to be a nurse, I hope you have chosen a reputable school that will give her a better chance to pass the Licensure Exam.

From today's press:

Just like insisting nurses going to Germany via X company are the only legal workers, all others are illegal. And like wise in Singapore, nurses not getting jobs from PH and comnig here and securing jobs are illegal.

It means 21, 668 people have paid for 4 years of nursing training but cannot work as nurses because they have not passed the Licensure Exam.

The same statistic is reflected in the very low number of persons who have acquired a 4-year Education qualification and who manage to pass the Licensure Exam for Teachers (LET).
Only 1/3rd of the number who tried passed the most recent exam.

Without going into the merits or otherwise of having Licensure Exams, it shows that so many of the so-called "tertiary-level" programs are sub-standard and are simply diploma mills, owned and operated by powerful political figures who use them as cash cows to generate income from poor students who pay for a useless qualification.

As I said in my earlier post. Don't anyone be mislead into paying for anyone to "go to College" or to finish off their 3rd or 4th year UNLESS you do the due diligence on the status of the College, and whether it has a good track record in terms of Licensure Exam statistics.

And promptly a comedienne friend asked "if they are so happy, why the F they all want to leave. As they get the chance."?

Many have some skills in English communication and have demonstrated persistence and a willingness to take directions. So for jobs like hotel receptionists that require following procedures and getting along with people rather than discretionary decision making, they may be well suited. Maybe compliant behavior and a demonstrated ability to follow a routine is substituted for acquisition of concrete knowledge. So maybe we're at fault for trying to impose Western expectations about higher education :).

If the Western sponsor is satisfied with Eliza Doolittle landing a hotel reception job, perhaps not all is lost. Interestingly, technical knowledge may not be enough any more:

I am in New York City.

I am working but also with an eye on planning my next vacation / holiday to the Philippines in the early part of 2014 for 1 month.

I have rented a home in Angeles City the past few times but would like to find something a bit better in Angeles City or Manila.

I would like at least 2 bedrooms, bath, kitchen, air con, hot / cold water and of course privacy.

If you know of a place that is worth renting please message.

It would be great if its close to dependable transportation, especially because I refuse to drive in Philippines.

And Singapore govt has started to weed out those whose job doesn't match their qualification.

If they don't do it, I bet, a few thousand nurses will switch jobs.

BTW, a lot nurses who end up in Canada, as care-givers, are actually glorified maids, if I am to believe some nurses who jumped ship from Singapore to Canada. I. E. Maids, like live-in maids, with more freedom thrown in. And allowed annual vacation and more. So why fret, says some who 'migrated' to Canada.

Every hotel receptionist job advertised attracts more than 1000 applicants (personal communication from a 5-star hotel Human Resource Manager in Cebu).

Only the creme de la creme get these jobs despite hundreds (thousands?) of HRM students graduating every year.

The point that I was (trying) to make for those generous and thoughtful souls who want to sponsor a girl through College is not to be deluded that you are necessarily "getting her a job or a career" by sponsoring her through any old Higher Education course. The number of jobs available in the "middle income" sector is quite astounding simply because employers cannot find sufficient persons capable of doing the work required. This population of unemployed persons in the Philippines contains 1000s of "graduates".

Most of these "graduates" from second-rate institutions are literally unemployable in their chosen field, and become fast food counter staff or, more usually, maids and / or OFWs cleaning and cooking for others for minimal salary.

It's a tragic loss of human potential, all brought about by a seriously un-regulated HE system.

But he was so persistent that no way could he have been scammed. But most likely have this girl had her philo bf close by without my friend knowing. Atleast investigations made by him also looks in this directions. As you may know by now I have 2 pregnancies going (one ms Preggy in Quezon and ironicaly my half pinay GF back home). Logisticaly I don't know how I will manage both of them and it seems maby I will become father to two babies within this year. OMG well well whats happened has happened. I may just move into the wilderness without reach from modern technology using smoke signals when i need new pornmagazines and other supplies. These graduated HRM students are very welcome why the Phil's economy to leave the country and work as OFW remitting money back home.

Sure the reason they graduate so many nurses and HRM is not for the domestic economy but for the overseas markets.

Many western countries have cut back, seeking to find local staff. In some countries immigration etc is a political football and the OFWs are caught up in this also.

Having seen the accounts exam (for example) at a good uni in Cebu, I tend t agree with the statements earlier on the education system. And I thought the UK was dumbing down education.

Interesting article about the new guns issued to the police. IMHO says a lot about the economy etc when the cost of the gun is twice the salary of an average policeman. And of course no one will be tempted to sell it and claim they lost the gun. See the last paragraph.
