Stay away from certain bars
Hi!
I just came back from Riga. Nothing noteworthy happended because I got sick. BUT. On leaving, I saw this small tourist magazine everywhere at the airport. You know 10 centimeters by 15 cm, called Riga something. At the back, there are ads for stripbars, and escorts latvia + escorts riga. Most interesting for visitors is that there were listed quite a few bars that were known for ripping off tourists.
So. Get this small tourist booklet, it's free, leaf through to the back and there it is. There were too many for me to remember or to write down here.
A very late report - June 2010 in Latvia
My report of my stay in Riga of June 2010
This summer between half to end on June I was with my friends (mixed group of men & women) to Latvia, so this was not necessarily a mongering trip. I did have fun when I went outside the group to do my thing with local girls. The first part was almost 2 weeks in Latvia & the second part was almost 2 weeks in Belarus. My report of Belarus can be found here:

Latvia isn’t that poor anymore
According to a friend who has been to Latvia before it joined the EU, it was like heaven and he thought it was such a pity that he couldn’t stay much longer as he was there for business.
IMHO Latvia is extremely overrated. Since joining the EU they have gathered loads of EU funding: on many buildings, bridges, trains, buses, and even private homes of people, etc you see the logo of the EU’s European Structural Fund. This has made them really rich because as my local friends have explained me it’s a cultural thing there. Get EU funding for your projects and you can get half of your company given to you for free with EU funding or tell the EU you are building a community building while you are actually building a 2nd house for yourself. It is really funny for what stuff you can get EU funding….
There is a rich part and a poor part in Riga
Latvian women look more and more westernized, well at least the university students I have talked to. Since I was only staying in richer parts of Riga I haven’t seen much of the poorer parts where rich Latvian kids don’t hang out. When going to eat at the big Ludo restaurant out of town when going there with a tram you will see part of the unsafe poorer areas. When you go to the mafia run central market near the central bus station, you will see the real poorer part. My Latvian friends have told me stories of their friends when they went to the poorer part of Riga, and they even got beaten up and robbed of their money and clothes and shoes.
But the girls at the cheap central market look like proper Eastern European girls, and unfortunately I didn’t have enough time spending my time there. If you go hunting there, go in a bigger group as it is safer.
Girls?
Enough bashing the corruption, now going to talk about girls. Are they hot? Yes, they are! But is it like going to Eastern Europe? No, it just feels like being in Western Europe – They have really westernized in this part of Eastern Europe, maybe also because you have so many western tourists coming to Latvia.
A very big disappointment to me was that girls don’t look like proper Eastern European girls like you see in for example Moldova. They are too westernized and dress like western Europeans. But that doesn’t take back that they are hotter.
Even though this big disappointment I was able to enjoy myself as I took a few days of time away from my group so I could spent time chasing girls, which I also enjoyed doing and doing stuff with them.
A big comparison of girls (this is just a generalization):
- Is it in Latvia easier to get girls then in Moldova and Belarus? Yes, definitely. Why? For the simple reason that most girls fluently speak English.
- Are they hotter than in Western Europe? Yes
- Is alcohol and tobacco cheap? Yes, absolutely
- Would I come back to chase girls? No, not worth it. I’d rather go to London, Berlin or Paris.
- Belarus girls are really hot & have big language barrier as my Russian is really basic
- Moldova girls are hot but very bitchy & see you as a wallet of money
- Latvia girls think themselves as proper EU citizens and like to mirror the west.
- Maybe P4P in Latvia is better and cheaper than Western Europe, but I haven’t done that.
Of course there are hot girls in Latvia, that isn’t something I am denying, I only want to stress out here, that it isn’t as beautiful as it was 10 years ago. Maybe Estonia and Lithuania are better destinations as it less a tourist destination as Riga, which has been traumatized by the loads of cheap flights loaded with Brits, Italians and Turks. Just an idea…
Best places to meet girls in Riga?
For me the #1 favourite place to meet and date & escalate with girls were the parks. Just go there, sit down next to a girl and have fluff talk, get a bit more interest from her and try to do some friendly escalation & slowly close the deal to meet up later that day – You get it?
Other ways is to just walk around in the parks and randomly start chatting with people walking around – same story again – chat, have fun, escalate a bit and meet up later.
How to approach girls? After some trial and error I got the hang out of it.
1. Priviet! (Russian) or Sveiki! (Latvian)
2. Hey, quick question Do you speak English? (with a facial expression that your lost)
3. Ask something (really doesn't matter what)
4. Talk, sit somewhere down and escalate your conversation and escalate more physical.
5. Have fun!
One big lesson leant: some people in Latvia hate Russians that much that they feel offended when you start talking Russian with them (mostly older people). My Russian knowledge is really basic but my Latvian was non-existing. So, a tip I like to give you is to learn some basic Latvian phrases.
How are the villages?
Yes, I have been to a few villages, which was a new experience to me. Well, some people in my group were actually from those villages (were actually born there) so we weren’t some strange pervs coming there to scout for girls. Which villages? Ogre, Usma and Jurmula.
Well, what I can conclude from my staying there? That the girls are really hot but very shy for foreigners & it also didn’t help that my friends were drinking alcohol the same time and I couldn’t just stay behind too much in drinking.
Did I reap any local fruits? Honestly I was too tired most of my time of late night drinking extremely cheap vodka with my friends and playing stupid drinking games with vodka. It was fun.
What will I go next summer? Probably Ukraine, because I haven’t been there and would like to visit the biggest rave party in Eastern Europe: Kazantip (which is held in Crimea).
Here are some nice vids about Kazantip:

The longer TV report (in English) here gives the best impression of Kazantip: http://www.vbs.tv/nl-nl/watch/music...n-the-black-sea
Can be a lot of fun & I might go there. Maybe also nice idea for you guys as well.
Well, I hope you can learn something from my report.
Love and Carnage,
Worldbank
