I always tip, being from NYC it's what we do.
Tipping is an art. The right tip, to the right person, at the right time opens doors, or shows respect, or many other things that make service better, or gets you what you want or out of what you don't.
In the phills, 'old-school' tipping works real well:
-tip the person, not the place. Tip on the down low. No one sees it. Just a quick handshake with a thrice folded bill.
I can fold a bill in my pocket. Have it out thumb and palm for the pass.
Never had a philipino miss it. They like and know the game.
Wanna float a 'kite" to some fine waitress on the down lo?
Jot your cell# on a 50p note and pass it.
Always works for a call back.
Why bother?, you might ask. Because it works in so many ways. People remember you and accord considerations.
Take the test, start passing 20p notes freely around and see what happens.

Tipping when service is exceptionally good or when you want to invest in someone is smart! Use tipping as a tool.

I don't agree with handing out free money just for the sake of it. That is pretty much the reason why we see all the negative reports here. Just because the place is cheap doesn't mean everybody should get a free handout for doing nothing. This is not an incentive based approach and leads to spoiling/expectations of people.
Just because a girl brings you a beer doesn't mean she should get a tip. Now if she brings you a beer and rubs her tits in your face, then maybe give her something. Feel sorry for her, because she works for peanuts? Don't give her a tip out of sympathy! Tell her she can earn extra by coming over to your room to fuck!
Let's not forget, AC is a SEX DESTINANTION! It is not a resort or holiday place.

In Australia we pay our workers enough so that they don't have to beg!
In our country a tip is considered appropriate for unusually good service.
Australians find it intensely irritating/annoying to have people constantly begging us for gratuities.
America is such a wealthy country, it is shameful you pay your staff such low salaries that they must beg for gratuities as a component of their salaries.

AV you made the common mistake of implying that New York is synonymous with the US. it's not of course, in the sense that its got its own rules, its own customs and its own culture.
Typically in the US servers in restaurants expect to, and usually do receive tips. Other service occupations such as taxi drivers may expect tips, but don't always receive them.
Here, I rarely give money to anyone "demanding" top, but frequently tip for services--in whatever realm-- that I consider above and beyond the usual standard. It's a way of expressing my appreciation for a job that's been done well.

This is probably one of the biggest problems people make when they travel/monger in foreign destinations. They think as if they were "back home" and act accordingly especially with their wallets.
PI and all of SE Asia has it's own rules and customs and it's best to conform to them when you travel there. Do as the locals do and try to pay what they pay. It's no wonder why foreigners are dubbed as "stupid" or "walking ATMs" by the locals.
I hope fellow mongers who come to this board seeking info about proper pricing and local customs actually put into practice what they've read here. There really is no sense in overpaying or spoiling these people beyond what is necessary.

Just a bit with that last part. I've never heard any service worker in the US ask for a tip. Or complain about one. Or complain about not getting one. Mexico, on the other hand...

Tipping
I am sick and tired of this topic.
If there was an emoticon of someone flogging a dead horse then I would insert it here.
All of us have different ideas about this topic, and nothing anyone says here is gonna change my views. I suspect it is the same with virtually everyone else.
Can we get back to helping one another find the quality totty? Forget about the tipping shit.

I have a brillant idea.
How about simply skipping the posts that doesn't interest you? This forum doesn't exist to cater only to your interests.

Being American I have never had anyone ask or beg for a tip. American workers get paid well and if there was no tip expected then the business owners would just factor that into the cost of food or service they were providing. You can either tip nothing, a minimal amount or alot. Its up to the individual.
I go out to dinner with my 86yr old father and he tips very minimal no matter what the service is but I usualy tip more when I pay.
I would never go to another country and expect it to be the same as where I come from.
I have a Dutch relative that happens to be a cheap ass even though he is very wealthy. When we go out to dinner whether it be in America, South America or Amsterdam he always just pays for himself and thats it! Even if somebody like myself picked up the bill the night before for the whole group.
I never knew where the term "lets go Dutch" came from until I met him.
I still think he is a cheap ass :)
I have not been to Austraila but Im sure I would find things different there that might be better in America but that is the interesting part of visiting another country.
Let me say it another way for the tourist, your young innocent girlfriend who loves you so much, is taking it on a regular basis by the local expats or Filipino men in her neighborhood. She is probably working the internet for guys. She may even have her local boyfriend living with her, except when you plan your visit. But you won't believe me, not your girl, she loves you so much, misses you so much. Ha ha
Is this true nearly 100% of the time?
I have been sending "my girl" 10K php (200USD) for a year so she can live in the province with her children. When I call her I always hear the kids in the background. And sometimes I talk for a minute to "mama".
What % of girls actually are true to their "tourist boyfriends"?
Am I an exception?
An active bar girl (getting both ladies drinks and bf on a regular basis) will make from 15,000 peso up to 40,000 peso a month, plus tips. There is no 100% of the time here as you read in the posts with so many opinions. BUT by your description your girl is in the province, not continuing to live in Angeles, she has children thus her earnings in Angeles may not have been so high. Maybe she is true to you, who knows, but one should ask how she came into "her children". How many different boyfriends, husbands, foreigners, that might provide a clue into her mentality.
In the end, do you really care. Your not spending a huge sum of money on a monthly basis and when you come here you have a girl and maybe family that treats you like a king and shows you a great time. If you feel good in helping them out (and assume you do), then go with the flow.
