While China made some progress since the times of Mao (millions of landowners executed during the land reform, the great Chinese famine due to the "Great Leap Forward", the cultural revolution), post Mao then Tiananmen square, protests in HK, etc, I don't think many people think China is a free country. I'll admit that they made good economic progress in the last decades, and this is probably why there isn't more unrest in China. The hypocrisy is that most countries and large corporations try to not antagonize China so that they can do business with them.

And their leaders are able to whip them up into anti foreign sentiments in a targeted fashion. A few years ago around the time of dispute related to Senkaku islands, mobs went on a rampage destroying Japanese cars in China. In the last couple of years with Meng Wanzhou imprisoned and Trump putting Hua Wei on entity list, pro Hua Wei sentiment inside China went up even more; even as Hua Wei kept losing smartphone sales outside China, their share inside China expanded that much more. They may have no freedom on wechat to criticize their own government in even the most muted manner, but their people are able to vent and issue all sorts of threats v foreigners in most graphics terms and they often do; Aussies and others on the receiving end in the last year know that too.

As for not holding them to the same standard, why not? Their actions have more detrimental impact on the rest of this world than that of any other nation. None more than Europe. Most of European tech firms have been hollowed out due to theft of IP by China. 20 years ago, Europe dominated global telecom networks. Now, the combined value of Nokia, Ericsson (Alcatel and Siemens and Lucent / Bell Labs -- all of these disappeared, bought by Nokia) is less than half of food delivery company in China called Meituan. All of Europe's share went to Hua Wei of course. US is not great but at least we recognized the threat posed by China a bit better than Europeans did, who are happily handing the keys to their future to this most evil regime.
