I'm not saying it doesn't ever happen or that there's no risk or need to be on alert, but it's just not been my experience. I've been all over the city and done some admittedly dumb things, late at night, alone, walking home. Could be I'm lucky.

I think like anywhere, if you use a bit of common sense, exercise some caution and aren't a loud mouthed trouble seeker Phnom Penh is no more dangerous than say, Melbourne or Singapore.

FWIW I walked all around the Patoon area and up to 136st tonight and it felt exceedingly safe. Actually feels safer at night, than the day because every st is fairly quiet. During the day feels like a motorcycle driver might drive by and steal your phone if given the opportunity.

When I go out drinking all night in PP I always take a safe tuk-tuk. One I know. I pay him all night. We go to a place, I come out, we go to the next place. I have never any problem in PP. Why do you assume they died as a result of criminal activity? Are you sure some of them didn't die a natural death (heart attack, stroke, chronic or malignant illness), drug overdose, traffic accident, suicide, or plain old "death by misadventure" (common for tourists who don't know their limits)?
Maybe you should look at the number of foreigners who die in Thailand each year and tell us why Thailand is safer.

Out of the 119 foreigner's death, 1 was from murder. Most (86) were from illnesses. 6 were unexplained. Out of approx 5 million foreign tourist plus the ex-pats, there was 1 official murder. Not bad. Wondering if that murder was caused by a local or another foreigner. Locals do not kill tourist. We tourist are protected. The government / country needs our tourist money.
86 were injured officially, out of 5 million. The article does not break out the numbers between crime from locals, crime from other foreigners, and accidents. I would be curious on the number of non-violent petty crime.
The US state department just put out a good map indicating 7 levels of safety for travel. Note: it is not all inclusive. There will be areas of safety and danger. You still have to use your brains.

Interesting to note that Cambodia is grouped together at the 2nd level of safety with Thailand and Laos. Also interesting is that Vietnam is lumped together with South Korea and Japan at the 1st level. As expected, the Philippines is more dangerous at the 4th level.

But not because of crime. But because of the traffic. Be careful in the traffic, because that is the real killer.
I have never felt unsafe in Phnom Penh. There is no reason to unless you wander off the beaten path. Same applies to Pattya and Bangkok. Stay where there are people and you are good. Just don't act like a fool or p1ss people off.
AskeAske is exactly correct. Traffic should be anyone's main concern in the SE Asia countries.
