Ofcourse if foreigners go to the market they would not know the average rate of anything. So they buy what they need irrespective of the price. Does that mean the seller can hike up the price for locals? The answer is NO.

If the seller demands foreigner prices for his wares locals would avoid that product forcing the seller to lower his price. Remember his core base of buyer are locals. He will not survive on on and off foreigner clients.

Now that I have given a lecture on economics.

Apart from fixed price + tip or no tip in places like AC, Massage places at many destinations etc, the price is fixed between the guy and the girl. There are some or many of us who have a budget on what we are willing to give the girl. If some girl demands more than our budget we refuse. Ofcourse there are some of us who agree for any price.

Who is right?

Both are. People who pay high prices cannot do it all the time so the girl has learned to demand more and settle for less depending on her finance.

Going rate will not change just because few punters want to pay more on occasion.

The Baht has grown considerably on one hand and so has the barfine. Doubly doo-doo. However, you still see ex-pats paying. But who they pay for has changed. It is those with the ways and means to follow the market trends that fuels this market growth.

So, if you really want to make an impression on the market? Buy local foods, stay at cheap mom and pop hotels, don't go shopping at the mall, don't play golf, don't go to the mega-bars and barfine / drink, etc. Doing that makes the rich, richer and brings larger investors into the market who will spend a premium for nicer venues. Er. These venues will try to recoup the investment by charging higher prices. DOESN'T THIS MAKE MORE SENSE TO EVERYONE?

The reason I got pissed off at Slippery's comment was not his opinion of me overspending, he is entitled to think so. Some are happy eating McDonalds everyday, others are willing to pay extra for a finer meal, some only want finer meals, it is a matter of taste. What I disliked was his totally arrogant, unconstructive and negative comment that did not help anyone, and for a newbie would probably be very demotivating. That said, I deliberately posted the costs at Pharaoh because that is one of the most valuable insights I like to have when I go to a new place, so I know what cost to budget for and know how to avoid getting ripped off. Pharaoh is a higher end KTV so of course the prices are higher. Take it or leave it, it is up to each to decide.
