Gambling Man? Biking Around Mindanao.
Well, Lonely, your proposed bike trip around Mindanao could be a great adventure, or a great disaster. All depends on your comfort zone, your karma and your luck. Most guys on this board won't go to Mindanao, period! Most of those that do, will only visit Davao or CDO. A few others travel there on business and only travel by private vehicle and stick to the main highways. Very few of us go off the beaten path. I have travelled extensively around much of Mindanao on several different trips. I have covered South Cotobato in the south east all the way up to Surigao in the north east. Main roads and God awful secondary ones.
I have travelled all across the top of Mindanao from Surigao to Dipolog on the north west corner. Travelled through the Budkidnon Valley several times. Been as far into Zambo Peninsula as Pagadian. Almost all my travels have been by public bus transport and V Hire. I rely on my personal radar and gut feeling. I have steered clear of Cotobato Province and southern Zamboanga. Why? Because my gut was telling me,"That's far enough. Don't push your luck." So, if you are the kind of person who is prepared to accept the consequences of your actions and 'Suck it up' if things go sideways, then go for it!
Funny you should mention flat tires
I don't know man, but I was just in Davao and I wanted to go trolling provinces. I asked 6 or more Davao locals about Marilog, just up the hill. 2 or 3 said no problem, the guys with guns that stop you will be the good guys. Around 3 or 4 said there's goons there that might steal your motor. I didn't have an extra 63k to replace the bike I borrowed so I canned the idea. Others said the same about Malita and Sigaboy. That's a long ride, nowhere have I ever rode a motorbike where I got a dozen flat tires in 2 months. The tubes they have are garbage, they come apart at the stem. You may want to go to one of those bulkanizing shops and beef them up. Also a liner between the tube and the tire.
A few years ago I bought a bike to tour Cebu island. That damn thing had flat tires at least once per week. Serendipitiously, wherever it went flat, there was a guy nearby with the little kerosene candle and the other stuff to fix it. Pretty amazing. Yeah I think the ticket would be to replace the tube as soon as I buy it. I bought a Chinese bike last year in ghana for touring and I asked the guy about the tires and he said,"These are tubless and you will have no problems with them at all." I didn't beleive him but he was correct. Not one flat in 4 months of horrible roads all over West Africa. So, go figure.
I have this question about Zambo up on a few sites and from the feedback I'm getting; I'm tinking of giving up the idea and just crossing between Davao and Cagayan de Oro. Normally what happens is that I hit town, meet a few girls and then a few more; pretty soon they are bumping into each other at the hotel desk. That's when I like to have my moto handy to get out of dodge. I don't know what's wrong with me. I meet a beautiful girl that wants to screw me all the time and then my eyes start wandering to others. I just want to fuck everybody, I guess. Oh well, it's a big world; I can try. Later and thanks for the info dude. PH
Would this disqualify this ex US congressman from running here?
If he changed his nationality to Filipino (I know a big assumption) am sure he would fit in nicely given the alleged pork barrel scam, the MRT issues and a previous posting of a link from MSN about the background of some of the elected officials LOL.

Flood situation in Metro Manila
I'm planning to visit Manila in the next couple of days and the news on Manila flooding is worrying me. As such I'm not too worried about the rain and the safety but I feel uncomfortable to stay at the hotel throughout the day with no chances of visiting malls and little chances of visiting pubs and for mongering.
Looking for advice from the residents who are currently experiencing this flood in Manila. Can you please let me know whether it is a good time to visit Manila and when will things return back to normal over the next 2 weeks. Also, how is the bar scene will look like now? Will all the entertainment centers are closed during the current flooding period?
Also, I may be staying in EDSA Shangri-la and may need to go to Quezon city for work. Please let me know whether I can commute to office daily (in taxi) during this heavy rain period?
If this is not a good time to visit Manila, please indicate by when I should consider travelling again.
Avoid Manila for the next month or two
Just my 1 cent worth.
The transport facilities will be in tatters, the hotels will be overloaded, the clubs and bars that have not been flooded will be an option, but the entire infrastructure will be wrecked.
I actually left Manila the day before the heavy rain, it had been raining every day for the previous week, but only 1 hr a day, so the ground was weel saturated before the storm hit.
I have a house in the city on relativly high ground, and it is still safe, as is my family.
The storm is moving very slowly away, but dragging all the monsoon rain with it.
Avoid the country, for at least 2 months.
