Unfortunately the phonetic translation system does not work for all words and kounye (=now) looks like a word of African origin, but you have shown how someone could quickly pick up an ability to communicate in Haitian Creole with a bit of effort and application, especially if they learn some of the common Haitian words that don't have equivalents like "anpil" (very) and "bagay" (thing). However most short term visitors to Haiti will struggle to get up to scratch quickly. I know when I was in Haiti after the earthquake, there were billboards in many locations with pictures of a variety of different looking people saying "Nou se Haiti" and my first impression was that they were promoting tourism and saying "Now see Haiti" until I figured out that they were actually proclaiming "We are Haiti!". A lovely girl asked me to "fe lamoo" and I thought she wanted me to feed the cow, but when I got home and looked up the dictionary I realized all she really wanted was a fuck.

I was wondering because the chicas that I know that are always talking about Johnnie Walker there is no way they could afford to drink it. A online chica last night was talking about Johhnie Walker black and asked do I drink it and I told chica I have never had it and she went on like its the drink to have in Santo Domingo LOL.

Of course they learn in childhood that Carnacion is a synonym for canned evaporated milk, or Colgate (col-gar-tay) for toothpaste, so then they spend their whole lives paying extra for these branded products. This was brought home to me when I was in a supermarket with a chica and she wanted to buy a box of "conflecks" for her daughter. She picked up the box of Nestle cornflakes,"crunjientes why deliciosas hojuelas de maiz integral" which were 93 pesos, but I pointed out to her that there was another box of cornflakes the same size on sale for 59 pesos. Now to me conflecks are conflecks, but she stuck with the Nestles, explaining that her daughter prefers this brand. Her daughter is three years old.

Like you I am not a particular enthusiast for Sosua. In four years of visiting the North Coast and then two and a half living here I have never stayed overnight in Sosua once. In my early days I used to go there to find chicas but once I learned a little Spanish and how to get around I found I could get better results in the Puerto Plata area where I have always stayed and now live. However, some of the criticism Sosua gets is unfair. A lot of it has a racist element or a snob element. You have set out many of the advantages and disadvantages but in thinking about why I ever go to Sosua I realized that you have missed out one major reason why mongers go there. I have met a lot of guys on the boards and made some good friends. I don't think I have been to Sosua for over four years except to have dinner with monger friends or otherwise socialize. Some of us have got a little charitable project going here and a lot of guys have helped with that. At any time a newbie could arrive in Sosua and within a couple of hours be introduced to at least a dozen guys who will show him around and give him all the information he needs to get the most out of his trip. Many repeat visitors will tell you that they return to be among friends, because they can be sure of finding some in Sosua without needing to co-ordinate holiday dates. None of that applies to me because I have always hunted alone and I would usually rather stay at home and read a book (preferably one eulogizing Byron or Cromwell) than spend hours in a bar, but it does apply to many others and is an attraction of Sosua to many mongers.

The best thing I like here is the beach. But with Jao showing me around giving me a taste of Santo Domingo and me finally driving out to Juan Dolio I think all my problems are solved. I'm going to explore in Puerto Plata the next couple of days as well. Then round out my trip in Santiago. Sosua is a zoo. But I definitely recommend it for guys who are point and click or do not speak Spanish. For them it is paradise.
