the study was based on a sample of approximately 10, 000 men from nine sites in six different countries. i believe they claim that only the cambodia sample is representative of the country as a whole. as i read their sampling description i understood them to say that the results were only representative of populations for the sites from which their research subjects were drawn. their tables reported 95% confidence intervals. so if they report that 10. 9% of men in one site's sample acknowledged having engaged in [url=http://isgprohibitedwords.info?CodeWord=CodeWord125][CodeWord125][/url] a single woman, they also reported that the likely percentage for the population as a whole might be, for example, between 10. 5 and 11. 3. this is akin to political pollsters reporting research polling results for a candidate of 45 percent, plus or minus 3 percent. i can't speak for other countries, but in the u.s. political polls are often based on 1000 or 1200 voters. so the sample sizes these folks are reporting are actually quite large as social research goes.

Was Harry Thomas able to provide some evidence in support of his claim about sex tourists? Similarly, can you cite some empirical evidence that the typical poor Pinay who moves to a Western husband's country becomes an exploitive burden?

From where I live in the states I typically pay upwards of $2000 in airfare alone to get to Manila. Food, lodging, transportation, and incidentals run my typical two or three week trip to at least $3500. I think most of us who have the wherewithal to do this are not financial outcasts. Social and moral outcasts? Maybe, but the Congresswoman's assertions were about those who seek to marry Filipinas, not those who come only to get laid.

There is another way to investigate her assertions: looking at the actual Filipina-Westerner marriages in Western countries. There are certainly many on this forum with bitter feelings about Filipinas who marry men, for example, here in the states. But there is a sampling bias in those reports, because most on this forum are men who are not in contended marriages with Filipinas-with a few exceptions. That is, those who enter into happy marriages with Filipinas have little reason to engage this forum.

But let me add evidence from relationships between American men and Filiipinas in the medium-sized city where I live. I know most of them because I know most in the Fil-Am community, and I know the community works hard to draw Filipinos and Filipinas into their local association. Out of the scores of such relationships with which I am familiar, I know of two that give me pause. One is a former cop who reportedly browbeats his Filipina spouse; but physical abuse? Other Filipinas in the community keep a close eye on her and think not. Another relationship, quite new, does have some physical abuse, and others in the community are helping the woman to extract herself from the relationship.

From the other side of the equation, are the Filipinas in these relationships exploitive and burdensome? Absolutely not. I know these couples quite well, and with these two exceptions, these are marriages that most men would envy. So I reject the assertion that most Filipina brides, even poor ones, become burdensome and exploitive. There is a reason that many on this forum report GFE experiences with Pinay p4ps-quite unlike what they are accustomed to with p4ps back home: These women are attentive and affectionate because they have been socialized to it. Exceptions? Of course, but not usually.

The real problem with the Congresswoman's model is that the moral standing of these Western men is not the critical factor. The determining factor is the women's poverty. To the extent that SOME Filipinas glom onto undesirable Western men, the Filipinas who are easily fooled by the undesirables will not be dissuaded by a Good Housekeeping Seal of Disapproval from a foreign embassy. Males and females I know in Singapore, the amount of abuse by Filipino men towards their women, not necessarily physical, but undue demands for money, gifts etc, either when he guy is here with his spouse or the guy is in PH, vs any foreigner who is either shacking up or married to Filipinas. For latter, I never heard of any guy asking money from the girl, I mean girls who are gainfully employed.

And in Philippines, I have also met enough freelancers who are forced to 'make money' for their husband / lover / bf's expenses. How does that compare then?

Some police dept's don't charge for a basic NCIC criminal history, some do; applicant pays; cost (when applicable) varies from about 75 to 125 USD here in the USA. In addition, a work history as well as bank / investment statements to prove financial liquidity & stability are required in order to show that you are capable of supporting your intended bride and that she will not become a "burden to society".

The criminal background check will not necessarily eliminate an applicant if he has a record, but it will weed out any habitual offenders and those with a history of domestic violence. And yeah, there's always ways for, as Gwen put it: "vagabonds or social and moral derelicts" to beat the system. It can and does happen; and these are the cases that the media grasps onto and sensationalizes. You seldom hear about the thousands of success stories of happily married couples.

What she proposed is not all that bad, but IMHO the USA already has a fairly good screening process in place and I'm sure that most other western governments do as well. The Philippine government can require a criminal history record check and financial records (if they don't already) , but how in the hell can they require a "morals" check? I know of no way for any one to summarily judge a person's "moral character".
