I would add that the social pressures from family etc with the conventional boyfriend / girlfreind relationship can be very strong. This seems to be another motivation for the lighter "gik" relationship.

When I first heard the term 'Gik', it only applied to guys. She said it like I was her 'gik-low-aah', meaning "gigalo", but all screwed up like she had read the word but then completely mispronounced it.
BTW, this gik thing is incredibly prevalent in Thailand, and most farangs have no clue as to how many of their honeys are banging Thai guy giks in the background. So, these back door Thai guys are singularly referred to as the Thai girl's "Gik". (And you had better believe that that both sides definitely do brag about it to their friends, in fact they brag about it a lot! )
Now, by some sort of naturally convoluted Thai osmosis, the term can mean almost anything.

Absolutely! actually I used it at Oilies and once the girls learn that you have a "gik" they almost always offer to become one themselves.
Anyway, Barko, you should be careful when you talk about thai culture, people don't like it so much over here... they will complain to Jackson adn soon enough you'll end up like OTH.
Better stick to what is the Cheapest ST on Sukh (or similar....) that way, the ignorant masses will be happy
