The Udon and Nong Khai ladyhouses opening and closing is quite normal. They can even close for a day and then sudden be full blown the next evening.

I can say almost all of the girls are there on their own will, and they can go home any time they like. Actually they are making quite good money and many building house for their families back in Laos. For 300 bahts type, the girls get 200. If they have 10 clients a day, it will be 2000 bahts. This is a huge money for them in Laos. On weekends they can have up to 15 or even more a day.

I have chatted with many of these girls, I can say they are there to make money on their own will. Some don't like it, then they go home. The ladyhouses there are not like in Cambodia. There is no human traffking involved. They don't lock up these girls girls. The girls are free to roam the streets in Udon or Nong Khai.

I personally think the closing is again temporary. It has been closed so many times in the past, espeacilly when there is a new boss in charge. Then its a matter of time when both parties reach the"mutual benifits", then all things back to normal. But once a while they will stage some crack down for media purposes. I think after a few days, all things back to normal.

Whenever is closed, there are lots of pimps on the streets or every tuk tuk driver will arrange for you private viewing.

I have just returned from a three day search of Ubon and Sisaket. I had hoped that the few reports on this forum, which suggested that little was to be found there were not definitive. Alas my own search tended to confirm them.

In Ubon we asked numerous tuk-tuk and samlor drivers for where to find the reasonably priced girls, and in particular any 'ladyhouses' which the Thai men use in most Thai towns. They repeatedly took as back to the same pair of kareokes located in the northwest part of the old city. I don't recall the name of the street but any tuk-tuk will take you there. I generally hate a kareoke more than any other venue, but these were very down-market, so that it appeared to be acceptable to simply drive up and ask the girls to hop in; no need to enter, listen to bad music, and buy unwanted, overprice drinks. I took the least bad-looking of them for 500 baht short time, but back at her room she insisted on a condom, so I left without doing or paying anything.

There also appear to be higher end places around town. We found one on a street just north of the park, paralleling the main north south street (Chayangul?). We pulled up around 2:00AM but the place still seemed to be open in a shadowy way. It was of course a kareoke, but the a couple of decent looking girls were hanging about outside and they said the short time rate was 1200-1300 baht. Obviously we declined.

Our hotelier had stated that there were providers 'around the park, late', but we discovered the reason for her chuckle - they were not women. Apparently there are no lady houses or any reasonably priced venue in Ubon, or the Thais were unwilling to share their location with us. We ended the night unrequited.

The next day we fled in desperation via the lovely Thai train service to Sisaket, which was at least far more picaresque than modern Ubon. Hotels near the train station can be had for 120-250 baht! Alas another night of intense searching found only the dreadful kareokes again. At one we were robbed of 410 baht for two beers, a coke, and 20 minutes sitting pointlessly with a pair of 30ish women! After that we only entered these places to ask their short time rate. The first clip joint had offered it at 500 baht, but all the subsequent ones wanted 1200-1500, an astounding rate for a poor backwater town, and highly dubious.

Finally we befriended the night staff at the train station, and asked them where to go, and they directed us to the other end of the platform, where a few very aged and horrible looking ladies were available for 200-300 baht. We declined, but found a few girls in their early 20's around the front of the station - I took a slightly pregnant one for a 300 baht round back at the hotel. Miserable BBBJ (as one usually finds in Thailand outside the tourist areas), but good BBFS with creampie.

My friend took one I did not see after I had gone, but he reported that she was so bad that she gave up trying to service him and tried to leave (he had only requested a handjob!). Some points:

1. The train stations are generally where it is at, just like most places world wide. Always check train stations. Loiter, walk to the quiet spots, you will see them and they will see you.

2. Cheap hotels near train stations are obvious slapper hangouts. Loiter, check out nearby markets in Si Saket, always loitering, walking slowly, playing Mr Innocent. The good carp are there, waiting to be fed.

3. Please note you volunteered 300 baht more or less up front. This is good money to them and hard money for a horny guy on an Isaan wage. It puts other prices into perspective.

4. There are great fucks in Isaan if you play the game right. There are also awful ones as you discovered. Being a slapper is not for everyone.

5. I expect Freeler to appear on the scene soon with tales of Old Faithful, the well known Si Saket "gee-ser", who shoots water miles into the air.

6. Top market there is rip offs ville as guys with cash will have all the pussy they can imagine.

7. Next time, try Buriram. These are heavy duty fuck towns. They do not really cater to the Club Gitmo type crowd. But they are all the better for it. They make you appreciate the simple things like the money in your pocket and the dick in your pants all the more.

Thanks, Martians. Just a follow up question. You recommend Buriram - is the train station the main place for action there as well? How does Surin compare with SiSaket?

Oh I'm well aware 300 baht is excellent money, which is one reason I'm so scandalized by other places quoting 1,000-1,500. However I did not [b]volunteer[/b] 300 - I only agreed to it after trying for 20 minutes to get her for the more 'correct' price of 200. I think she knew she was the best girl out that night (not saying much), so she held out for the extra hundred.

i have just completed a 24 hour search of buriram, where i found very little. the train station contained only about half a dozen prostitutes, and all were of about the same leve - not absolutely horrible, but certainly not 'doable'. in contrast to the sisaket situation, where there were slightly more girls, and while most of them were spectacularly horrific, two or three were doable twenty-somethings. i was surprised and disappointed to find such a small number at buriram train station. to top it all off one old lady of around 45 ridiculously quoted 500 baht as her price. i walked away. strange!

i have now given surin the once-over. my first impression of the town was that it is the biggest of the buriram/surin/sisaket trio, which surprised me. i had always been led to believe buriram was biggest, followed by sisket, with surin being the smallest. not so. generally speaking buriram gives off an impression of poverty, surin of relative prosperity, while sisaket seems to take on back in time to the thailand of an earlier day. it is truly a big old fashioned farm-town.

arriving by train, i chose the 'new hotel' just to the right of surin station. like most hotels in lower isaan, it was a good deal. 190 baht for a big, clean fan room with hot water, western stool, and bum gun. one a side note, avoid the restaurant in front of this hotel - twice as expensive as normal isaan restaurants for unexeptional quality. we spent 520 baht for 3 dishes and two beers! can't help but wonder if we were cheated.

my friend stayed at the sang thong hotel just a long block further away from the station. this hotel is worth noting for the monger because they very kindly order girls to your room for 500 baht short time, and the quality was not uniformly bad. one may need to impress upon the procuress that one wants under 25 and attractive, or one may simply turn away the first batch of 35-40's that show up, as i did. i did take one girl ordered in this fashion back to my hotel - a cute but strikingly fanged 23 year old, but alas she refused bareback and left, both of us unsatified (she financially, myself sexually). my friend's choice was, he said, a bit too old at nearly 40, but a performer. it is rare in thailand one finds a girl willing to perform a bbbj for anything over a few minutes.

one definitely feels less safe in isaan than, for example, pattaya or bangkok.

we also went to a kareoke, but took nothing. we could only find one in town, located next to the bus station. interestingly they claimed the place was open 24 hours, only turning the music and lights down from 2:00 to 3:30 am, and that the police in town took a lenient view of closing times - very unusual in isaan. i suppose that may explain the slightly higher level of prostitution available. certainly the best of the three lower issan towns. all three were frustrating and disappointing in some way, but i have to admit i did get sex in all three for 300-500 baht.

Actually it was my natural wariness and cowardice which saved me grief in this case, OTH. That and the fine, solid, well bolted door between me and however many were outside. Linguistic skills would not have helped particularly.

The simple lesson is - and it is a good one - that [b]one should never, ever bring a girl back to one's room. Always use a short time room[/b], or her room. This has always been my policy in the past, and will be so again from now on.

I have a question for the Other Areas forum: Can anyone report whether the Udon Thani houses remain closed or have they reopened? Or failing that any news from Nong Kai's houses.
