In any case, when one works in the service industry, it often makes sense to work when the customers are on holiday -- isn't this only logical? This seems to be the case, at least in the service industry in the States and no one here seems to be crying for mistreatment and abuse of workers on this account.

There is a difference of views regarding business hours between the US and much of Europe. In the states you can go grocery shopping 24 hours a day. In, for example, the Netherlands grocery stores will often close in the early evening. Why? Because there is a general feeling that workers need to go home to be with their families.
