General Info

Gentlemen, a little illumination, please. Unlike some of the globetrotting mongers here, I’m a middle-aged guy whose career in this sport only started just over a year ago. So far, I’ve tried Canada (Toronto and Montreal) and the Dominican Republic (Santo Domingo, Boca Chica and Sosua). I kind of figured Costa Rica would be next on my list. (I’m inching out gradually, as you can see. I hope to get to Thailand by my 97th birthday).

Here’s the problem. My next vacation is the first two weeks of September and I’m torn between going to Costa Rica and heading back to the Dominican Republic.

From what I’ve read, CR seems to mostly mean San Jose, at least for a newbie without fluent Spanish. San Jose is a fairly sizeable city. In the DR, I spent some time in Santo Domingo, but mostly found that I enjoy Boca Chica and Sosua. In those small towns I can combine a beach vacation with the availability of some sweet, young, not too expensive female companionship.

From what I’ve read here and other places, the only place that sounds comparable in CR is Jaco, and most of what I’ve read about that place is negative (dirty beaches, so-so availability of girls, etc.). I have also seen the advice about finding a girl in SJ and taking her to some nicer beach area, but with my limited experience and Spanish, I don’t know if I could pull that off.

Another thing, the scene in SJ just seems a bit more formal, if you know what I mean. Most of the posts seem to center around the Blue Marlin or the various massage parlors. In Sosua, say, I can leave my hotel in the evening and walk down a half-mile or so long street with several open air chica bars and a couple of discos. I can take a seat in one of those bars and order a beer and in something less than a minute there will be a girl next to me asking if I’d like some company. There follows some talk, then some negotiation, and then it’s back to the hotel. I’ve also met girls at the beach with similar results.

From the posts I’ve read, I don’t sense this sort of loose atmosphere in SJO. I’ve done the massage parlor thing in the States and the escort deal in Canada. Both got the job done, but were more “professional” than the informal sort of hookup I find in the DR.

So, I guess my questions are directed to those who have experience with both Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic. What are the pros and cons of each? Which do you prefer and why? Is there any compelling reason for me to try CR, other than variety? I know that it’s a beautiful country with lots of interesting things to see (so is the DR, by the way). What I’m looking for here is some feedback on the mongering aspects.

Ever here of the island of Curacao? It is the "c" of the A-B-C islands in the Dutch southern caribbean.

Gorgeous women, relaxed beach vibe, ALL hotels are guest friendly, English widely spoken in hotels, restaurants, beaches and it is outside the hurricane zone so a late summer/fall vacation isn't going to get you wet.

You should consider it, and don't feel so guilty about not following the crowd. ;)

Ford you are correct about Curacao being below the hurricane belt. However, I don't think that same atmosphere can be found in Curacao like in the DR. That relaxed walk down the street while lots of sexy chicas approach you in the middle of the day can not be found in Curacao (at least to my limited knowledge). Although GFE are widely available in Curacao you have to hit the Brothels like Campo. I have limited exprience in Curacao and had great times at the Campo. The only Chicas I saw walking were in otrobanda and Punda and these Chicas look so bad it was like asking for death if you touch them. That being said Curacao and St Maarten (not necessarily in that order) run a close second and third to the DR. But if it is Hurricanes you are worried about Curacao wins hands down.

Too cold to travel to Argentina or Brazil, hurricane season in the Caribbean...

Cartagena and Medellin are awesome places - I've been to both, but you really think these places are good choices with a guy with "limited Spanish"?

SJO is o.k.- I've been there 2x. - but its more like a long-weekend place. Not a real comfortable walkaround vibe for a guy with limited Spanish, unless you want to walk around "Gringo Gulch" from the Hotel Morazon to The Presidente to the Del Rey and step over the passed out vagos/desplazados who sleep on the sidewalk in front of the New York bar. ;)

Take a girl from Campo during the day to any of the islands 38 beaches and you'll have a total gfe to swim with, eat with, drink with, sun with and make love too.

No Curacao doesn't have the same exact vibe as the DR, but he said he wanted to try a new place, that's the point. The Sosua/ Cabarete/ North coast vibe in the DR is unique, but people should experience different places too.

You love the Sosua vibe, than go back to Sosua in Sept, but bring your rain gear! :D

I agree with Ford. Having been, over the years, to SJO, Cartagena, DR, and Curacao, I would recommend Curacao for our friend Victor Lazlo. Though the reason is less that he has limited Spanish. Remember that all of the ladies at Compa Alegre come from Colombia, DR, or Venezuela; Spanish speakling places. He will still have need of Spanish to communicate well with the girls there. I recommend it as a new place to go and experience a wide variety of shapes, sizes, and races of girls at a low price and extreme convenience.

A blind mute could get laid in the DR however. The girls know "fuck" 'suck" and money in English, and if not if someone goes without knowing even numbers well the derserve what they get. It is not that hard to negotiate. Just as long as the "meet normal girls" (e.g. try to pay zero) dream/fantasy doesn't slip into the conversation.

Gentlemen, thank you all for your replies. Although nobody directly addressed the DR/CR comparison (except Ford a little bit, in his second post), it was very telling to me that no one here said “Hell yes, you should go to San Jose!” Equally telling was the fact that I received seven replies plus a couple of PMs in this forum, as opposed to one reply in the CR forum, and that one asking what sort of prices I pay.

My Spanish is limited but not non-existent. I am probably up to 300+ words now. I can speak in complete sentences and have even managed to pull off a couple of jokes (hard to do in a foreign language). I’m still a beginner, though. I don’t know the proper verb conjugations and frequently hesitate, thinking, “Now what the hell is the word for…” In conversation, I probably sound like a moron, but I eventually manage to make myself understood.

As for hurricane season, it never even crossed my mind, probably because I spent two weeks in DR last September and can’t even recall if it ever rained.

I enjoy the DR greatly. But after a half dozen extended trips in the last year and a half, I seem to be developing the “been there, done that” syndrome, a restlessness to know what else is out there. For the moment at least, I believe I will scratch CR off the list, to be replaced by Curacao and perhaps a bit later, Cartagena.

I’m inching out gradually, as I said before. Anyone care to meet up in Pattaya in 2047?

You sound a lot like me, but at a little more advanced state. I seldom come out of the shadows here although I am here every day. i have read your post before. I have only posted here 2 or 3 times in the past. I was fortunate enough to get one of my post in the distinction category. That is a BIG Deal and honor for me. Yeah I am a simpleton. But your post is so indicative of my plans that it was scary. I too am Espanol challenged. I know a lot of words, just none of them go together right. But I too can usually get my point across. I have only been to the DR once, but I did 3/4 of the island. I hope to return in July or August. I will also try Jamaica and do the whole island also. They speak English or close to it so that will be fun. As I don have the Big bucks and little vacation left it becomes hard to venture far. I ultimately want to make it to Thailand. Ths the top for me. Well keep asking the questions I need answers to. Maybe i will come out of the shadows a bit more. Thanks to all the veterans again, some of you have amazing patience in answering the same questions over and over because the newbies like me will not read the historical threads to see if the answer is there already to their question. Victor 300 words is a lot and shows you are making an effort. No not enough to date a good college girl but enough to get the point across and they apprecaite the effort as well, even P4P girls.

I'm trying to wade thru these reports, but after while the head gets to spinning!

I have a week to kill in Jan and I want to go somewhere reasonably close and cheap (I'm in Tampa) and DR looks like a good spot. I've traveled/mongered extensively in Europe and Canada, but never have headed south. So the million $ question. Where should I go in DR?

I'll be alone, white/40s, speak no latino dialects, and basically flying blind. I'm looking to fly in around 20-21 Jan and get a taxi to a hotel thats smack dab in the middle of ho's ville.

Any advise on which city, which hotel, etc would be greatly appreciated!!!

Ford; Suggesting Curacao is a vey poor recommendation. I've been to many places and Curacao is the bottom of the barrel. One major 'barracks style' p4p venue with 5-6-7s. Little or no nightlife & the absolute worst food of any place I've ever been.

Bottom line is: Curacao is Lame. Save your money!

Central & (northern part of) South America are much better options in summer.

Stay at Sosua and at the Hotel Europa. If you have any questions you can ask me and I'll be able to answer them.
