Rio 2012
Hey Gents,
I'm preparing for a carnival run in Rio for 2012. I've done carnival in Trinidad so I've got to compare. Anyway, I was looking at some of the posts from 2009 and it was metioned that the termas are closed during carnival. Anyone know if that's been the case for the last two years? Thanks.
I wouldn't call Copacabana Palace a "dinky" hotel.
Agree, Sperto. Copacabana Palace is a great hotel. However, I've traveled the world extensively and compared to some other great hotels, Copacabana Palace is not coming on top, except price. Regardless of the semantics, it's overpriced beyond belief at $1000 / night. Any suggestions of a reasonably priced hotel on the beach near all the action will be appreciated. I may even lookn into apartments, but don't feel too comfortable withe this "genre".

Miramar
try miramar hotel. the rooms are bit old and with some mold odor but it is affordable ($ 150 / night) with a prestigious open buffet breakfast in the morning. it is a 4 star hotel located on the beach (posto 5).
thank you, tiradentes. greatly appreciate the advise. will research miramar on trip advisor. i would prefer high quality hotel, but not overpriced. my problem is not so much with the quality of the top hotels in copacabana, but the fact that compared with their peer group abroad they are beyond overpriced.
thanks again!

What is scortshow?
For $1000 a nite, stay at VIPs Motel, and have a scortshow girl all night.
Seriously, some of those higher end love motels have suites that are better than the hotels mentioned. You can watch a buttman movie on porn TV in the same room where it was filmed!
What is Scortshow and where is VIP Motel? My intention is not to pay $1000 / night, but to have high-end comfortable accomodations without paying double the price of what they should cost.

Aibolit
I am a little annoyed when people come to the board and don't do basic research like searching this board or reading Bubba Boy's guide to answer questions.
That said, as I'm more charitable than cranky tonight, I'd refer you to Accor Hotels website. They have some reasonable properties in Zona Sul at prices that are less than some of what you quoted.
http://www.accorhotels.com/
Do a search on Rio De Janeiro and consider the Botafogo / Copa / Ipanema properties. The Mercure in Ipanema (Raina Eliz) is showing R$432 per night these days but at R$1. 8 per USD or 1. 85 that's not horrible. It used to be about USD$100 night in 2006, by comparison. It also happens to be around the corner from Centaurus and a short walk to the metro. They have some other properties I haven't tried but as you note Trip Advisor may have some advice.
Meanwhile, read Bubba's guide and abuse the Board search feature. And please post the results of your trip, with as many details as you can muster.
Lastly, I must wonder why people keep making plans to come here given the rampant inflation in Brasil and. Until recently. The strength of the Real. If you are choosing to come, be advised you are heading into a heady market where inflation is running 10-12% per year (don't believe the official figures) and the Real has been overvalued for a long time until the past 3 weeks. With that landscape, it is churlish to complain about prices. You know what you are getting into.

Scortshow = www.scortshow.net
The website of VIPS motel is.
http://www.vipsmotel.com.br/
Check on the website for prices. The cheapest suite (apartment luxo) is quoted at 115R$ per 8 hours, and extra hour for $R18. 4 each, so 12 hours would be 188R$.
This scene was filmed at VIPS.
http://www.roccosiffredi.com/en/Dirty-Dreams-04-Scene-1/film/11775
(BTW, up until early 2010, you could also bang mayara rodrigues who is in that scene. Look on gpguia. Net there are threads on atriz porno.)
The Talita Brandao scene in this Buttman film was filmed at VIPS:

I have less knowledge than the senior members on this board, and I don't want to distract with chit chat. But the below list of love motels in Rio (which is from a brazilian website a few years out of date) , and a inet search should point in the right direction.

Best, Aibolit
I agree the Copacabana Palace is not a great hotel by world standards. It's rooms are in need of a serious makeover, I would say they are 4 star at best. The hotel amenities are quite nice though. Yes it is steeped in history etc and is probably, along with the Hotel Alvear Palace in Buenos Aires, the most famous hotel in Latin America. However not at all of the same standard that you would expect from such a great name hotel that you would find in Europe or the US.

This hotel has nothing to envy to Europe and US palaces : Savoy and Ritz London. Crillon and Bristol Paris. Principe Milano or Pierre NY.
Certain rooms need makeover I agree but other have been renovated.
History and tradition are the difference with the modern establishements.
The Copa Palace concierge has the most impressive list of national and international escorts in the world

Prive run
Went for a prive run today, just got back.
Caught the train out to Tijuca, dropped into Annes massagem (http://www.annemassagens.com.br/) & Tigressas (http://www.tigresastijucanas.com/). Went more for a look than anything although have been with a few of the girls at both places in recent weeked. Decided not to stay with anyone this time. Annes has been very good of late, Tigressas has always been good since I have been going there. Didn't drop by Mix, they have been a bit of a mess of late.
Caught the train to centro. Dropped by Bel Prazer (http://www.belprazer.com/) , good strong line up. Was going to stay with one particular girl but got pipped by a Brazilian guy. He actually asked me if I wanted her, I just said I can return any time, so he went off with her. No biggie. Ended going up the road to Casa 19, (http://novamassagem.com/) same owners as Bel. Ended up going away from the place pretty happy.
I guess I saw 30 girls, out of that there were maybe 5 doable, pretty good hit rate, about the same as a big terma I guess. Spent R$100 + R$20 for some lunch. Successful trip!

Thanks for the update. I'll be staying in Tijuca starting tommorow, so that's real handy.

Discussing Copa Palace
Hi all,
Discussing Copa Palace here is quite amusing. Old, worn, totally overpriced. It is just a 4 star hotel claiming to be 5 stars and charging the price of the Burj al Arab hotel in Dubai. Imagine how much pussy you get for this money.
There are so many good 5 star hotels in Rio which charge 400 Real!
Waste of bandwidth and time in my opinion.
There are so many good 5 star hotels in Rio which charge 400 Real!
Really? That's news to me. By all means tell us what they are. (I think we may have different criteria for what constitutes a 5 star hotel.)

Copacabana Palace
Even though I prefer apartments I would be very happy to stay at Copacabana Palace. I couldn't care less if it's standard is 4 or 5 stars. Copacana Palace has a fame and history as no other hotel in South-America.
It's fascinating to see old BW photos of Copacabana. Copacabana Palace stands proudly in a quite empty Copacabana (it's also fascinating to see how small the beach was in the old days).

Carlos Primeros
For 400 reals you won't have currently more than a 3 stars. Not even in peak carnaval or NYE season. That said, it is admittedly ridiculous, considering that the Oriental Bangkok, one of the top 5 hotel in the world, has rates around 160€. Don't know why anyone would bother to go in Brasil nowadays.
