Also another gym down the street a bit, across from Casa Maria (or something like that) All-Inclusive hotel. This is more of a local gym but has more equipment. Just not as clean as the Platinum.

[/QUOTE]I have been to the barrios with several chicas and your description is spot on. In some areas such as POP they will rent an "apartment" and four or five of them will live together splitting the rent. As you said, if you go into these barrios with someone that lives there you will be safe but be prepared to be "on display". You will get curious stares from almost everyone but at the same time ten seconds after getting off the moto or out of the taxi someone will put a plastic chair out for you and offer to make a run to the nearest tienda to get you (and them, haha) a beer.
In November I was in one of these barrios with one of my regulars helping her move into a new place with a couple of her friends, a real poor area just outside POP. Two minutes after I had sat down outside a guy came up to me and starting speaking to me in perfect english, come to find out he had lived for fifteen years in the same city I grew up in New England.
I love going into these barrios and hanging and partying with the locals, I have made some great friends both with benefits and without.
But to answer Rodeo's original question, it is not a place to set up your mongering camp because there aren't any short term rentals, these girls live in very poor strictly residential places with the barest of essentials.
I'm heading back next week, I have a hotel room in Sosua as there aren't any hotel options in POP but I will be in the barrios of POP during the day visiting friends and partying and prowling the bars of Sosua at night.
Yesterday did a walk through at 5pm. No chicas on the street. Mostly european guys drinking at the bars, not many Americanos. Many families up by La Roca and the beach. Even saw two Chinese family, that was different. Couples riding bikes and families pushing strollers. At Mia headed to POP not many mongeres grouped up excited about their trip, saw three African Americans and they were going to Puerto Plata. One guy was funny, he had on a nice suit going to the campo. No hot water, bathroom outdoors etc. One guy was going to SD he had a Internet girl he had been sending200 use a week. He was going with 5000usd for a week. Going to take a nap and hit the strip at 10pm.

No, not really. But I spent $500 US on a round-trip ticket and spent $2000 US on a week in Sosua, last October. How far would that $2500 go toward meeting the basic needs of a family in the campo? (I mean, if it were parcelled out into the hands of "La Abuela," who spent it on food and cooking fuel and maybe T-shirts and shorts for the kids; not the "necessities" of a working girl on Pedro Clisante, such as hairstyling and cosmetics and what Amy Winehouse called "fuck-me pumps".)
I know I have a bare glimpse, a scant idea, of the poverty so many Dominicanas and Haitianas grew up enduring. By comparison, I believe that our homeless people in the USA have it pretty good. As for me, with my DR$2000 in my pocket and another US$2000 back in the room safe, no wonder the girls look at me as a walking ATM.
Bar Central is frequented almost solely by drunken, chain-smoking Germans with almost no Haitians. The Merengue Bar and Latino's is at least 75% Haitians.

One of the perks of having a regular down there is that you can get very comfotable in the barrio.
First couple times you come in you will get the stares, but after a while they'll get used to you being there. I'm hooked into an extended family and they see the guys and the old folks giving me the big welcome (yeah, the plastic chairs, the beer from across the street, old ladies bringing me coffee) those stares turn into smiles and they stop by to say Hello, and check out whats going on. I pour them a plastic cup of beer from the grande Presidente I have in one hand, while holding the new baby in the other (there's ALWAYS a new baby)
Sunday they bring the music out and the plastic chairs and the girls dress up in their finest and strut their stuff (for the Dominicanos) and it's a party. The guys might bring their new girlfriend to join the group even tho the mother of their babies is sitting a few feet away, they seem cool with that. Fact of life down there. Interestingly, the guys always seem to have a relatively strong bond with the kids they have fathered, even if they are shacked up with a new chica.
I know there's some jealousy and passion beneath the surface with the chicas, but they do have a way to let it go and enjoy the moment.
I play pool with the brothers and the uncles. I drop unnanounced into the houses to say Hello, to the old folks and and I honestly feel at home there.
In fact I feel more happy at peace there than I do in my own home town. Definitely safer. I used to visit once during my week, but now I'm spending more time there during the day than I do in Sosua.
And as I'm drinking my beer with them in the shade, I'm looking over at my beautiful novia doing her family thing, and wondering how I got to be so lucky.

All the other chicas had a "damn what happened look" on their faces. Hit Merengue and classicos at 12; 30 am. You could walk around without bumping into anyone. The place between Merengue and the street was empty. Saw more europeans dancing in Classicos, Sosua has lost its beat fellas. Its sad to see people dance so bad that they just step off beat. Also five guys sat next to me in Latinos and tried to strike up a conversation. All dominicanos with earrings and slight makeup. I wasnt having no convo because I was pissed Melina got married. Well one of these guys starts dancing looking like "Richard Simmons", doing unnatural male types of moves. Now my gaydar is up and these dudes are tricking I figure. Time to leave but my gaydar is up and it seems Sosua might be changing in ways we couldn't predict. No parking in front of Classicos. The open lot across from Domino bar where the guy grills chicken is wired off. El flow had 10 people sitting outside. Passions has fish tank bars and modern deco (bravo Peter). Dee from the beach is setup in the parking lot for some excellent BBQ. Sosua is very quiet during the day. No sounds of motoconchos racing everywhere. Many drunk Germans staggering down the street talking to themselves. Fantasy the new sex store has been closed for two days. Even saw a few muscle bound Russians sitting at the bars drinking water and watching everybody. Fellas try dees BBq wings in the parking lot of Passions, deeellliccciious.

Even when you begin to board the plane you could always guess with accuracy who the mongers were as you walk down the isle towards your seat. On my last trip, I used la pela as currency. Ex: it cost me 2 la pela pills to have me taken to airport (atl) from marrietta (50 mins drive).
