I am a long time follower of the board and have finally found an excuse to get over to Shanghai on business (I am a semi regular poster in the Melbourne, Australia forum where I live. Although slowing down as I get older and slower!).
I have mostly mongered Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia in the past so looking forward to taking on Shanghai for the first time.
I am still working my way through the last few years of posts to gather a list of saunas and clubs to visit. I will be in Shanghai between the 4th to 18th of Jan and will post as much info on my adventures as possible.
One key question I am yet to be able to answer from the board is how girl friendly hotels are?
I am staying at The Peninsula for the first 4 nights and the remainder of my stay is at the Four Points Sheraton in Pudong area (I have no choice on the hotels). I have historically never had issues in bringing girls up to my room in 5 star hotels across Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam etc. Is Shanghai any different in this regard? Any feedback on these two particular hotels would be greatly appreciated.

Nowadays most better Hotels have room card controls in the elevator. If you expect a decently dressed visitor you did hand out your second room card to, they can come to your room alone.
In other cases you need to pick up a guest in the lobby and go together to your room. Most often also no problem in the afternoon or early evening.
Sometimes you may get stopped then you face that your guest have to register and shows her I'd, then go on. Its a bit embaressing and I always try to avoid.
If you don't know sit in the lobby and see with couples going to the elevator.
Sometimes "business floors" have a separate desk at the floor with someone sitting there. Same story as in the main lobby.

Never stayed at the Peninsula, but Four Points in Pudong is okay-I would stay at the Sheraton in Pudong-it is just next door 45 seconds walking. Owned by company and they interact on reservations. Much nicer rooms.

Only while the Chinese new year end of January, some hotels will follow the rules more strictly, but now easy going in Shanghai. Could be you have to pick up her downstairs, but definitly no problem to bring her up (different to Beijing, where some hotels will not allow visitors in the room after 10 pm). One of our guides went there and ordered the 298 massage just some days after the report was published to check out the place.
The enviroment is great (you can see on the attached picture) , but for our checking session, the service only includes a lousy handjob.

But there are exceptions, keep on changing the area and try different places, and you will find a good one eventually. If you go down the central alley from 1911 (big nightlife area) in Nanjing for example you will find that all the girls tell you it's 300, even though they just asked the Chinese guy who went in a second before you to pay 150. It's impossible to haggle them down. I even went with a Chinese friend once, he paid 150, but they wouldn't budge and so I declined to partake on principle. That being said, there is a dingy little place a few alleys further that asks you 200, and it's the same price for everyone.
Three years ago in Hangzhou, I had some good connections with the Mamasan of one fine BBS Establishment. Price was 200, the girl went with you to a proper apartment and I often took over half an hour (girls were all 7 to 9's in my book, good times). To try something else I went to a place just opposite once and they quoted me 600.

I have found Shanghai to be the most difficult to negotiate but I have managed 200 RMB several times in different areas although it does seem to be the exception. The surcharge has been in effect as long as I can remember. Most BBS quote me 300RMB even if I go with a Chinese guy and they quote 150-200RMB for him at the same time. It could be an East China thing since the places you mention are located in that region. Perhaps, if you are a regular customer, it could be easier. Most of my mongering is in South China where I can usually get the local price or close to it. That said, many saunas are starting to implement a 100RMB surcharge for laowai. I wonder who gets the extra money; the girl or the house.

G. Laowais. In fact once I let it slip I was from the west (but ethnically Chinese) and the girl got very cross saying I should've been charged the laowai price!
Also I want to assume the price goes up higher if they don't like your look? I don't have anything to back this up though.
