Here is a picture of the Ferry inbound from Puerto Rico to Port of Call: Santo Domingo Republica Dominicana. I would often see it when I happened to be looking out of the window my ocean view apartment. Not bad for a broke, busted individual who doest not have 2 COP to rub together. LOL!

To leave USA from a particular airport, most USAns would need to take a flight to get to that airport, just as they would to get to Puerto Rico. So stating that it's an obstacle to get a flight o the ferry port is a disadvantage does not stand up (since it's the same if you choose to fly overseas too).

To take a ferry from PR to DR still requires Americans to deal with the hassles of airline travel (to PR) and then add in the hassle of handling your luggage and traveling to the boat, waiting for that, and then dealing with the boat travel time. So yes, there is a hard, tangible "disadvantage" to taking the ferry instead of just flying to DR. The cheap charlies always act like it's no big deal and that all " travel is travel" or something stupid like that and then move the goalpost to "well, I was just saying that it's possible" when called out.

This stuff always starts because some people can't accept that paying 100 k for a private, air-conditioned taxi from the Medellin airport directly to your hotel is a completely rationale and advantageous choice when compared to taking a 20 K public bus to San Diego / Centro and then paying another 20 k for a taxi to your place, all the while spending extra time to get to your destination and adding safety risks. It always has to be some sort of "weekend warrior throwing money away" or "foreigner getting fleeced" behavior so they can show off how they much save and how much better they are than others.

It's never good enough to just bring up the options and let people make their own choices on what they prefer, based on their budget and desire for comfort. They will say that but then sneer at people who agree and choose the option they don't like.

The original point was that someone said good luck taking a ferry from the United States to the Dominican Republic as if a ferry between the two does not exist. When people showed there is actually a regularly scheduled ferry, the person did not want to admit being wrong, but instead made every excuse why said ferry was not practical.
