I wondered if modesty was an issue in Thai culture. Another ex-pat monger on his blog commented that the "nice girls" good girl type don't show so much flesh, don't wear tops with bare shoulders, and probably never have a tattoo. That was his take on how to recognize a "bad girl" slutty girl. Not that he was being judgmental or anything, just giving hints. Any truth to that?
Yes it does sound odd that they are fixated on light skin. Another poster here commented recently on how he picked up an Isaan girl in a club and she apologized for her dark skin. You'll note that many Thai contestants in international beauty contests aren't all that pretty (IMHO) but have very fair skin. My GF is more "honey" colored, or, in Mexico she would be morena clara. But she always jokes about her being black and me being so very white. And I don't tan much, but when she goes into the sun she turns 2 or 3 shades darker instantly. She's not too happy about that.
However, cultural modesty plays a big part. Go to a beach in Myanmar, for instance. All of the local ladies are covered from head to knees. Not only do they want no sun tan, but prancing around in a bikini is just not done in some cultures.
In my case, my GF considers tattoos to look "dirty. " She is death on them. I have met others who feel much the same. One lady I used to know believed that the prototypical bar girl had heels, a tattoo and a cigarette. That is changing, but many ladies still hold those feelings. While it's no longer universal, a tat still screams BG.
Yes, "good girls" tend to dress modestly. As Mr. S said, it's a public face thing. My GF won't wear jeans because it's the standard uniform for off-duty bar girls. She doesn't show much flesh when we go out, and probably wouldn't if I asked. She actually has a stupendous set of knockers which, sadly, she tends to hide. Of course, this is changing, especially with the young girls. They all want to dress like the models in the fashion mags, and most of those models dress like sluts. So, often you'll see young girls dressed exactly like hookers. But the more "mature" ones still tend to dress conservatively.
