i have mongered a lot in asia and thailand but this is my first trip to pattaya. maybe my report will be of use to other first timers.

central pattaya (soi 7/8) seems to be more laid back and have less ladyboys than walking street. there are many, many beer bars and some go-gos. lots of ladies on beach road but i prefer the guarantee of a bar (not ladyboy, not ****, won't drug you or steal). i tried both beer bars and go-gos and both short time and long time. south pattaya/jomtien beach seems to be where the russians and middle-east people go.

girls - i was never disappointed with the performances of the girls, never had a problem, never had them try to leave early. i did find the quality of the bbbjs to be poor - shallow, not very long, rough. it seemd like the girls did not know how but thought they had to do it. one girl from a go-go was really good but she was an exception. the sex was good universally - multiple positions, full penetration, no complaining. overall, great sex but bjs weak.

fresh off the farm girls - it seems like there is a constant stream of girls coming to pattaya and many have only been here a few days and had a few customers. these girls are unspoiled, very sweet and gf, cuddle and hold you all night but of course they are inexperienced, especially with bjs.

i found all of the girls honest, clean and nice people. i do go for the clean look though - no tats, smoking piercing and stay away from the hardened looking ones.

prices seemed very standardized barfine at beer bar = 300bt, go-go=600bt. girls ask for 1000bt st and 2000lt but you can negotiate down. i found it a good idea to make friends with the mama-sans (buy her a drink) and ask for her advice. they want repeat customers and happy customers and will help you pick the right girl.

i found the beer bars not pushy. you have to buy a drink once in a while but the girls generally don't beg for drinks. beers go from 40-100bt depending on the place and kind of beer. lady drinks seemd to be about 110bt. the girls drink slow and don't pressure you. i never got ripped off.

pattaya is cheap. you can get a decent hotel for 1000bt and and all you can eat quality buffet for 200bt. you can have the hotel do your laundry for a few hundred baht. all day trip to coral isalnd including lunch is 350bt. you can get laid for 300bt from a beach road girl or 1300bt for a nice ber bar girl.

pattaya seemd like a great place for teh novice monger. cheap, safe, loads of girls, easy to get the girls, good sex.

Eric Burden, thanks for your report - I was not aware that short times were being priced at 1,000 baht. In Pattaya I've only ever paid 500 per short time basic fee, not including tips for extra services.

In fact I had three in one day recently, and they were of interest: first I had a very good-looking busty twenty year old from the Beach Road. Thanks for the comments on Central Pattaya. I was in Pattaya back in May and pretty much limited my time to Walking Street. I will be returning in October and intend to branch out a bit to other parts (Soi's 2, 6, 7, 8), so any info on these areas is helpful to me.

OTH, the price seems low! I've had to knee operations in the mid 80's and had a crack knee cap in the mid 90's and the bill then was way more than you quoted and I had medical insurance and what the hospital and doctors agree to accept was way more than that! I had 2 minor scope on the same knee a few years ago just to clean up the floating fragments and didn't even stay overnight. Operation room, the doctor's and nurses just to put me alsleep and to recover before I went home was over 10,000. To stay overnight in a hospital in the U.S. for 1 night is 10,000 U.S. But for the sake of Hummer Bird let just move on and respectfully agree to disagree! I just wish you the best on your recovery.

The problem I'm starting to find out as you indicated in Thailand concerning medical is that the life of a person isn't worth a hell of a lot. There are few consumer laws that are available or enforced. The best hospital are pushing services on farang that aren't really necessary so that they can pay for all the glitter they have build and are making rcommendations for unnecessary medical procedure. When hospitals are telling you that you can stay for 2 nights and get the 3rd one free something is really wrong! In the last 2 years when I was home in the states my wife had to check into the Bangkok/Pattaya hospital for a simple gas reflux problem. They had her stay overnight on both ocassions just for observation the cost was 18,000 baht to the hospital from the insurance company. When I came back this February I took the bill to the hospital adminitration and question them why she was required to stay overnight since she had no bleeding etc... and given no long term medication and education to prevent this from happening again in the future. Their lack of response was clear to me that the only reason stay overnight was so that the hospital can make money!

Although, Thailand medical services are much better than others country but if the government doesn't provide some strict regulations in the future you are going to see lots more abuse from these hospitals. The price you quoted in Thailand for a simple scope seems to be the norm from my research in Pattaya for the Bangkok/Pattaya hospital and in Siracha Hospital. The key as in your situation is finding a doctor that can explain the problem and procedure in proper english and doesn't screw up a simple procedure.

When looking for a beer bar girl, the idea is to stroll slowly past the open air bars without sitting down, and thus commiting yourself, just looking for something friendly and cute.

When you find a likely prospect, (sometimes after checking out several bars and many areas), then you sit down to chat with her. If she's responsive to your interest and you like her, then you buy her a drink and begin negotiating terms.

Forgive me if I broach a subject that seems a little morbid but scanning through the back news reports on Pattaya One News, I was struck by the number of Falang suicides in the Pattaya area. Usually 1-2 a week (sometimes more) and most often by hanging, drugs overdose or somersault with pike and splat from a high building. Firstly I thought it must be high natural wastage amongst mongers as by default there are many fairly desperate, sad and vulnerable characters amongst the Pattaya expat crowd.

But the numbers are so high that I have started to think that there may be a rather more sinister motive behind these 'suicides' in that maybe that some are not as voluntary as first appears on the surface. We all know that life is pretty cheap in the LOS and for a few thousand baht it is easy, if you know the right people, to arrange a hit. And of course it is much less likely to attract police attention if its a 'suicide'.

Please tell me I'm being unduly paranoic but I suspect that assisted falang 'suicide' is rather more common in Thailand than the police would let on (not that they would be particularly concerned about the early demise of a few foreigners anyway).

Watch out for yourselves out there, lads.

I'm afraid you're being completely realistic. Unless the police have reason to believe these things aren't suicides, e.g. someone raising a fuss and publicly demanding an investigation, they're hardly about to increase their workload. 'Suicide' is the easiest option for everyone.

What's your definition of high? Try comparing the number of suicides with the actual number of foreign residents/visitors in Pattaya and these suicide and suspicious deaths rates have more to do with availability bias than being high. The police may not want to intentionally suppress the suicide numbers; they just don't seem to care much. However, with their limited recourses and attitude towards some foreigners no one should expend them to conduct any type of extensive investigation into a Falang’s death. Aside from their character or lack of character, these deaths do seem to be connected in some way their relationship with these sweet or not so sweet young things these guys thought they had only to discover the truth later.
