I saw the cops, they are giving out tickets to people breaking the fucking law, tourists and locals alike. Illegal parking and not wearing a helmet on a moto or scooter, that's what I saw. Its simple Sidney, abide by the laws of the country you are an illegal guest in and you do not need to avoid any streets in Sosua. Seems so simple to me but then you would not have anything negative to report on.

NO TICKETS, just a very sore dick, hahaha.

Some people come here thinking because it is a third world country they can do what the fuck they want and in some aspects this is true but show the police a lack of respect and / or don't follow the rules and you can find yourself in a heap of trouble fast and I for one don't feel bad for these people.

i was in sosua last september and the police was trying to shake me down for money. one of the chicas said i owed her money and called a street cop on me. i obviously refused to pay. the police eventually tried to make a false allegation against me. once we arrived to the hotel (which they tried to prevent) , their story unraveled. another individual, whom i happen to know, who was involved with the chica ended up paying 2000 pesos (which the police did not give to the chica but instead pocketed). i squeezed out of it and was surprised since this is the first time that i've had problems with the police (i've been going to the dr for many years!) later i talked to three of the security in and around the hotel and even they said that the police was wrong in harassing me. one was from a hotel across the street and he told the police on my behalf that the only thing i did was walk the streets, bothering noone.

another monger was staying at the europa and was driving towards cabarete. the police stopped him since they claim that he did not have a seat belt on. my friend was surprised given that he has never previously had problems driving in the dr. i explained to him that the police was looking for a handout. my friend did not have his driver's license so they confirep001ed his car until he could produce one. he returned to the europa and the owner diego said that the police was simply shaking him down and that he should give the police a copy (with diego's card from the europa! diego knows the commandant!) , not an original, driver's license (which the police sometimes will take and never give back!)

one of my friends explained to me that the new mayor has given police more freedom in dealing with tourists.

stopping someone for riding a motoconcho and not wearing a helmet is absurd. most of the time the locals do not bother wearing helmets scooting around (whether it is the law or not. just look around.). this is not the first time i've heard and know of the police doing this.

i know of several expatriates who live down there saying that many times they would see police along the side of the road. they stop to ask the police what happened and the cops were just stopping people and trying to get money. after a while the expatriates would see the police along the side of the road and the expatriates would simply drive by.

sometime last year the police arrested the young haitian worker from terra linda, for no apparent reason. the owner had to go and bail him out (while at the same time making a complaint to the former commandant, to see what action could be taken against the police). there have been an occasion or two where the police has tried to enter terra linda and the owner had to warn them about harassing their clients.

for the most part my last stay was peaceful and i only had problems with the police once but it did put a damper on my vacation. i still enjoyed it but one has to be careful. it is not just about breaking the laws and the police correcting you. it is also about dealing with corruption. i am guessing that this is common in 3rd world nations.

But I'm sure you remember the "old Sosua" and the free fall it was. Now the watered down Sosua is reality. But most streets including outside the NG are one way with cars parked on both sides. And I never have seen an accident even with half naked chicas walking the streets. I've even parked the wrong way on one way streets with no problems. The posts here now adays are about changes in Sosua and they are much needed. But where does it STOP. Is the next thing a dress code (no flip flops and tank tops at night) or how about DUI checks outside of El flow at 10pm? Pestering tourists about parking is just the Policia trying to make up for the lost revenue lost because there are no more girls to shakedown. It sounds like guys want to be fucking the same 10 chicas paying100usd. No GFE because the girls are limited. And having bullshit laws enforced that before were never enforced. Before it was no respect for the mongerer but now everyday tourist are harrassed? The corrupt ass Policia want to enforce PARKING and thats acceptable? I won't say thats BULLSHIT because I respect what your saying even though I don't agree that it right.

Was there pre-Christmas for 5 days and I got to say that place is heaven on earth. Was kinda scared first because of the negative reports I read regarding the crackdown.

Found nice chicks at NG, the beach, classicos and never paid more than 1000-1500p. A few times even nothing (and I don't even speak spanish).

Maybe it was better a few years ago but for any newbie like me it was already more than I could handle. I was so exausted after 5 days, I felt like I never needed sex again in my life.

Besides that I liked the beach, the food and the overall relaxing vibe of the town.

Definitely going to come back!

There's room here for ALL opinions, both positive AND negative.

For me personally, I love Sosua. I feel absolutely safe, comfortable and at home there. Never been ripped off by a hustler, chica or the cops, but I have met a couple of guys who have.

But if it happens on my 10th trip, esta la vida. I'll accept it as part of the tarrif, pay a few mil pesos and move on.

Basically if you follow the rules of the game, which have been posted here ad infinitum, you'll be OK.

Lock your shit in the room safe.

Obey the law.

Drink, but never get drunk with strangers.

Carry copy of your I'd. And if you're paranoid. 2 mil peso in your shoe.

If you get ripped off by a cop, a chica, or a bar tab, state your case quietly, make a deal and get outa there! You're not Mr Deeds who's going to right all the wrongs in a third world town in one week. Move on!

And NEVER try the rip off yourself, they do it better!

There's all kinds of mongers and all kinds of ways that they behave. I see some who are asking for trouble and before the week's out they usually get it.

The warnings are for these folks. Useful info for newbies.
