I've never had to resort to the obscene when dealing with Filipino crooks and their bullshit but being firm and showing obvious displeasure gets the message across. In Manila it is particularly wise to go with your gut instinct and bail if you notice suspicious behavior or a contact starts insisting on conditions that you do not feel comfortable with. You might want to stick to the bars if you don't feel hardened enough to deal with dodgy freelancers. Don't be scared to call hotel security and have your guests removed if they start making threats. Be sure to give the guards a nice tip.
