I was in RIO in April of last year and I ordered delivery too. I was called to the front desk and had to pay the VISITOR fee also. I stayed a smaller hotel in Copacabana, but I would say that this may be a standard charge. I don't recall the fee amount, but it was fine with me and the guys at the front desk were very professional and discreet about my guest.

Unfortunately the Sofitel always charges R$250 for the guest fee. Basically they don't want girls there but are prepared to allow it for $.

Charles[/QUOTE]In order to avoid to pay an extra charge I always wait for my visitors / guests in the hall of the hotel. I take the elevator with my guests without telling the reception. It's not their damn buisiness. R$250 it's a real rip off!

Charging extra for somebody visiting you in your hotel room is common all over Brasil, no matter if it's a cheap hotel or a expensive one. They charge what it's called "cama extra".
The first question I ask before I check into a hotel or a pousada is if they allow visits? If the answer is no I leave straight away. The second question is if they charge a fee and if so how much? This fee is often negotiable. If your visit isn't spending the night you can often get away without being charged anything at all. Sometimes they charge a fee between R$ 10-30. Just ask in a proper way. Tell them you have a local amiga and wants to bring her to your room to chill out and conversate.
Having visits can be complicated. Several times I had to sneak by the night staff with some date just to avoid complications. Once in Fortaleza the reception-clerk didn't allow me bringing my guest to my room, but allowed me to bring her up on the terrace on the hotel roof (the neighbour buildings got themselves a live-show :)). Sometimes I managed not being charged an extra fee by telling the reception staff that my guest had menstruation (if it's a male staff they might be understanding and lower the fee). Anything goes.

I've then met her outside and walked in with her with no hassles. Admittedly, this probably works best in the afternoon and helps if the lady isn't dressed to attract the wrong kind of attention. You should arrange this ahead of time, as I think many girls are conditioned to show their ID at reception. Once this happens at the Sofitel, you're sunk.
I agree that R$250 is a real rip-off as I once got stuck with this myself. I try not to stay there but don't always have a choice based on client requirements.

With an apartment you hardly ever get enough towels and sheets, and you wash your dirty linen yourself. Who has precious mongering time to waste washing towels and sheets. Then, too, there's security. At hotels girls can't bribe the doorman and the doorman asks for ID, so a gdp is less likely to act the fool on you. And many apartments have dirty mattresses with bed bugs. If an independent apt agent sees a mattress on the street some where and he needs one, get what, you'll may be sleeping on that mattress. Many friends have gotten bed bug bites, me included. I also caught the dirty sheets when first checking into an apt. So hotel fees can be good. I do not live lower than my standards at home when I monger. I will pay for service if it's reasonable fee. Even for the girls.
Re: room fees. I typically try to avoid these by always booking a room for 2 people (generally the same price as one) , and when I check in, I ask for 2 keys and explain my girlfriend will be joining me later. This has typically worked in Sao Paulo even over 2 nights with different chicks. May be different in Rio.

I've only been to Mexico and Thailand for mongering. The service was terrible in Mexico and although I had great fun and loved Thailand, I often had to search for some time to find a girl with a body like you find in Brazil and so far the overall service I'm getting here is above and beyond what I've experienced previously. Your drink prices are reasonable but I believe you are being overcharged for the program. Even if they raised prices recently, a 50% increase would be out of line.
I went to downtown Rio today in search of those elusive stunners I have been hearing so much about. I visited Rio Branco 156, Salas 3320, 2622, 1839 and 1216. Breakfast is included in the price, nothing is free but yes some of these breakfasts are pretty good.
Wash your own dirty linen? All of the apartments I ever rented all had access to a maid who came in and cleaned the apartment, changed the sheets and gave you fresh towels. Not very expensive so I usually do it every 3 days and I always have enough towels for 3 days.
Bed Bugs? Well I guess it's possible for sure, I have never seen them but most but not all of the apartments I have stayed in so does the owner of the apartment when he is in Rio so they keep their bed clean.
There are pros and cons to each choice here, sure a hotel has more comforts but an apartment has more freedom and is less expensive with less fees.
