A hidden gem. The real pinay
About 5 years ago, I struck up a communication with a woman in Cherry Blossoms.
She is a maid, working for an upper middle class family. So the only way that we could spend time together was in afternoons. I would stay in a nearby hotel, and she would stop in for a couple of hours each afternoon. Not the ideal situation, but when I first saw her, I was knocked over. Tall, very slim, good looking, reasonable pretty face.
I thought she was not the smartest tool in the shed, but I came to realize that she took a while to understand what I was saying in English.
About a year ago, she sent an email asking for money.
What for?
I need to pay a worker to cut back weeds in my tree plantation. Bugger me. She has 2,000 trees, furniture grade timber. This is a long-term thinking woman, as the trees take at least 10 years to reach harvestable size and maturity. So I suggested that she spray with herbicide Round-Up. That is what she did.
Then 6 months ago, she asked for money.
What for?
A powered water pump for her rice farm. Bugger me, more production, more income. Wow, no chicken shit here.
She is with me now, and we head off to her farm tomorrow.
Then she mentioned that her brother is a semi professional panning for gold. Pulls about 10 grams per week, but sometimes that amount in a day. About 1500 pesos per gram. Not bad money.
Then she mentions that she has a kind of business buying clothing locally at discount prices, shipping it to her mama in the province, who sells at about 100% markup.
At my stage in life, I am happy for one pop per day. But she expects more, not in a pushy way, she just likes more. I don't know how she does it, but she manages to pull two or three per day. I am gobsmacked. Nothing special, she just does it somehow.
So for all of the punters in ISG land who regale pinays as being lazy, good for nothings, this is more like the real pinay. Smart, hard working, forward thinking.

Netter be careful if you want to take a cutie overseas
From the Manila Bulletin. RK did make some sensible points a while about the general matter but this is getting silly. Can you imagine western countries asking it citizens to show proof of financial capability before leaving the country. The comments at the bottom of the article show what many think and claim it is another way to increase corruption in the BI.
What it does mean is that we will need to prepare affidavits as the 'sponsor', so the legal profession gains again.

New restrictions on filipinos leaving the country
Check this out.
Not too surprising given that there are literally thousands of undocumented Filipino workers overseas who demand their Government rescues them when things go belly-up for them in the host country.
