If you ask me where I live I live wherever I lay my head at night. I work on my computer and when I have down time I compose my messages. Didn't you say you were a man of modest means? How does a man in the United States work until he is in his 60's and describe himself as a man of modest means? I worked in finance. Allow me a second to illustrate my point.

If you started saving when you were 25 years old. And just put $1 a day (every day) in a low cost index mutual fund. Historically the S&P 500 has averaged about 8% over time. When you retire at age 65 you would have $80,000 and BTW I just assumed a 7% return over those 40 years. That is just $1 a day or $30 a month. You might have saved $5 a day or $150 a month and then you would have had $400,000.

So, when you say you are of modest means, the inescapable conclusion is that you weren't well educated and acquired no highly useful skills, I. E. A minimum wage type job. Sure you probably earned more than minimum wage given years of experience doing menial work but still.

A person with an education and meaningful work could easily save much more than my examples. Using Warren Buffett's advice. You would have used a low cost index fund like Vanguard and you could not help but build a small fortune without knowing the least thing about how to select stocks. Even a Paulie could have done this.

For the longest time, I had crossed Europe off my list because I had spent most of my time in France. You might want to look at Spain or Portugal instead. Anyway, I just got back. I was with my gal and we visited her friends there. And by all means, if you are a Colombian women and striving to be the best, you are going to get the hell out of Colombia. And isn't that what you want in a woman, one striving to be better and better in all things both sexually and looks wise?

Even though I do not partake with hookers, I can see the escort prices in Spain and Portugal are less than women are asking for these days in Lleras and Gusto's. And Spain has it set up such that if you are a Latina and have a grandparent with Spanish blood, you can be a citizen there. The Colombian women I met came there via work and marriage visas. That is how Spain is dealing with its population crunch, importing Latinos.

Thing is even if the wages in Spain and Portugal are 4 and 3 x higher than Colombia, I was not sure if the higher European expenses would make the net income a better deal. Thing is when I was doing the expensive touristy things like riding on Uber, I had to learn to stop that and do as the locals did. I saw where they locals shopped, ate out, got around, and were holed up. Once I understood how they did things, I could see how anyone in Colombia with a decent work ethic would come out much better in Spain.

I know you are going to France, and I have not been in a while. A buddy of mine swears the Muslims have taken the country over like the homeless have in California and he hates going there. I went to Spain and Italy, did not see a homeless issue, and I saw spinners galore. I was shocked. The jump in the quality of the women from Europe to Colombia was the same as it was going from the USA to Colombia. The European are much less curvy.

I can't blame V for moving to Colombia with what I saw five, six years ago. The quality you were getting for the price in Colombia IMO was unmatched in the world. But now? Nah, it sucks. The best women have moved out and V is too dense to realize it.

I have my gal and have no reason to move to Europe, but if I were still in the hobby, I would focus there.

But the fastest way to get V to move there would have been my going there and bragging about how great it is. He can't stand the thought of someone like me doing better than him.

There's no nexus between university education and high salaries, as is the case with many educators and other state employees, military who took advantage of the GI Bill, and even many physicians and attorneys in rural communities, while these provide "useful" services. Some of these as well as high earners lost substantial savings in divorces or health emergencies. Some of the above even blew their savings on hookers or gambling, but that doesn't erase their degrees or usefulness as long as they perform. Many Asian immigrants that pile in small apartments, never attend college, work three jobs at menial labor get way ahead. Sensible people consider their skills "useful" as they are often essential to the functioning of society. I could go on, but there's no sure correlations anywhere here as diversity abounds. (State and Local government version of a 401 (K)).

You were born under a lucky star. You grew up and worked in the US! Unless you were a complete dud (which seems to be the case) you could parlay even a semblance of an education, decent work ethic or any skill at all into a sizeable fortune. Just a small amount of investing over a long career even in State or Local government would have made you very well off if not wealthy by retirement age. Even a janitor working at the S&L government level with 4 kids could probably have managed to retire "well off".
