Dominican Police boosts airport patrols on Washington's warning.
Santo Domingo- Police chief Jose A. Polanco on Thursday announced the start of patrols with eight vehicles equipped with communications and security cameras to confront the assaults of travelers who exit the country's airports.
Polanco said the precautionary measure also responds to USA ambassador Raul Yzaguirre's complaint of the frequent robberies against travelers near Las Americas International Airport (AILA). The US State Dept. Had also issued travelers' warning on the rising assaults.
He said the first phase will be eight units of vehicles assigned to the airports AILA, La Isabela, Luperon, Maria Montez, Catey, and Arroyo Barril, Samana, Punta Cana, La Romana and Cibao.
*He said the airports will be patrolled 24-7 with two police agents per car, equipped with communication with access to the entire police phone central.
*Polanco said to improve safety for local and foreign tourists the vehicles will patrol the Colonial Zone and the area around Juan Carlos overpass, Santo Domingo East.

Anybody know if Iberia will let you in their lounge with Admiral's Club card or Platinum (Sapphire) oneworld frequent flyer status? The Admiral's Club is going away.

But mainly, tourists going to tourist locations. I think they arrested some workers from the airport as this is an inside job. I would no be surprised if the cops were in on it.
My girlfriend is always concerned when I come in late or very early.

Any guess as to why this is happening on this side of the island and not some place like Sosua / POP? I would like to think that POP has as much of a large concentration of tourists arriving at its airport as well.

sdq is the busiest airport in dom rep and has some flights that arrive in the middle of the night. i have driven to the airport at around 11pm to pickup or drop off friends and i have also arrived at 3am or 4am and never had a problem. no us citizens have been killed as a result of the incidents (would be nice if the murderers of several foreigners in and near sosua could be brought to justice).

Jao, the system is saying you are not receiving PM's for some reason, but here is your response:

And don't shoot the messenger; I definitely did not write the article. I assumed that it has been going on for a while because the updated article Revere posted shows that they now have the police more involved in the situation:
"Santo Domingo- Police chief Jose A. Polanco on Thursday announced the start of patrols with eight vehicles equipped with communications and security cameras to confront the assaults of travelers who exit the country's airports."
Which means that it has been going on so much that heat has been bearing down on whoever is in charge to step in and do something about it.
My question is why is it happening there and not someplace like POP which is much further away from the Capital (and out of the immediate watchful eye of people at the very top) and also has an abundance of tourist as it's main arrivals.

June 6 to June 28 is 22 days, do you consider 22 days a Long period of time? Obviously, it was brought up before on this board. The US Embassy issued its warning regarding the airport incidents on June 13, 2012.
I posted on June 8, 2012:
From Dominican Toady: "Santo Domingo- The Police arrested at least four gangs of thieves who robbed travelers leaving Las Americas Airport (AILA) in the last five months, including one woman in one of them, based in nearby Andrés and Boca Chica. The report comes just hours after the USA State Department warned American citizens on traveling to the country, noting the high number of highway robberies of travelers after leaving the country's busiest airport."

Seems the criminal activity was occurring at night (I have never had a problem driving to the SDQ airport late at night or at 3am or 4am. I believe Mr Gogo recently posted something about some flights into SDQ and POP, I believe he posted that SDQ had 17 such flights per day and POP had 3 similar types of flights per day.
Washington, D. C. Has violent crime, which is where the capital of the United States is located (The United States of America is a rich country and it doesn't prevent all violent crime from occurring, where its capital is located).
Were any US citizens murdered coming from the SDQ airport? Have foreigners been murdered in and around Sosua, whose murderers remain free?
Have you ever used Las Americas Airport (SDQ)? Do you have any reservations for SDQ airport for flights that arrive at night?
Arrive tomorrow in Santo Domingo, if it's not one thing it another with this airport bullshit. Damnn I just want to fuck girls in peace with out being robbed.

After reading your post (thanks for the info) and doing a search, from Wikipedia, for 2011, arrivals at POP (puerto plata airport) were Down 14% (about 755, 000 passengers). For SDQ (santo domingo) arrivals were up 1% (about 3 million passengers) which is more that 3x the amount at POP (Puerto Plata). According to Wiki, Punta Cana is the busiest airport, with POP in 4th place, behind SDQ and STI.
