My Manila Taxi Driver story
I was in the Philippines about a year ago, with the g / f (at that time) in Manila. I believe we were in the EDSA area, and wanted to go slightly out of Manila to visit a cousin of hers. I forget what the name of the place was, but it was about 90-120 minutes to get there with heavy traffic in the city and a rainy rush hour. Much shorter on the return.
Originally the plan was that we were catching a taxi from our hotel to the bus station. But the driver started engaging my g / f in tagalog as to where we were going? I knew this routine and wanted her to shut up, but she was young and naive and started blabbing away. So the guy makes an offer to take us to destination (instead of using the bus) for 500 PHP. It was a rainy night, traveling was a pain in the ass, so we accepted. I wasn't sure what the plan was, how long we were staying, etc. Turned out it would only be about 1 hour.
As we were going there, the guy starts proposing that he wait for us and drive us back too. Proposed 1, 000 PHP to do that. I thought to myself "if he'd do a one way for 500, he should do a round trip for about 800. He's not getting any fares out there to go back to Manila." But, he was going to wait for us, so we agreed to 1000 for the trip. Both me and the g / f understood that.
We finished the visit and went back to Manila to our hotel. I gave him 1, 000 PHP and he starts whining that I owe him 1, 500. I told him "No way. You agreed to 1, 000." He wouldn't give it up and followed us into the hotel. Started a commotion in the lobby that got the concierge and others involved. I told my side of the story and said I was finished with this and went up to my room. It spoiled my mood for the evening.
About an hour later, I get a call from the manager on duty, he wants to come up to my room and talk about the taxi situation. The driver was STILL in the lobby whining, an HOUR LATER!
We talked to the manager. He said he knew that 1, 000 PHP was too low for where we went. I said "Why did he propose that price then? We both heard it." And it wouldn't have made sense to propose 500 one way and 1, 500 for a round trip anyway. Not even with an hour wait at destination. He just kept coming back to "it is too low." I compromised and gave the manager 200 PHP for the driver and told him that was the end of it, and he left.
I have to say it made me a bit paranoid then. If time was of such little value to that guy that he waited around a whole hour arguing his point, maybe he's waiting outside the hotel to ambush me with some of his buddies? We didn't plan to go out the rest of the evening anyway, but the next morning I stepped outside the hotel, looked all around, and promptly had some guy come toward me out of nowhere from across the street. He wanted to hawk something to me or take me somewhere.
Point of this story is that you're always being watched there, and these guys (taxi drivers) have way too much time on their hands, and time is of little value to them. Things that would seem improbable elsewhere might happen in the Philippines because of the small value they place on time.
