I will be in Bangkok (and Pattaya) for a few days next week. wrt: the mongering I pretty much know what I'm doing (not my first trip), but I never seem to have great restaurant experiences.

So I am looking for Bangkok restaurant recommendations, specifically:
- great breakfasts
- good "hole in the wall" restaurants
- great Thai food
- anything else you want to share

Note: I most eat alone, reading a book, so places that accommodates solo-dining are preferred.

alright, here it goes then:

the disco, called the boss is not much to write home about. 300 bath each to get in, but you get a free drink wohaaa... my ladys idea were to get to another disco but the 16 y.o. niece would not make it in according to the driver so he took us to this place. about 10 persons in the giant place. maybe wrong day, i dont know. one or to freelancers but not more than that this night. im thinking, can i sneek in to the mp next to this place? of course i cant. new cab to patpong after a hour in the amazing disco for a pizza at pizza hut and then a drink in pink panther. then back home to their place to drop them off and now the clock is around 3 so for me its just to go to bed.

good atm as always that gave me some bath without fee and scam. but that i will write more about later.

now, ive been watching letterman for 2 hours on youtube. who dont love that mans humor huh?

Oh lord.... you made several mistakes...

1. Don't let your girl talk to the taxi driver, you are paying so you negotiate
2. if you see he stops the meter and starts again, ask him to stop, pay him the 45thb adn take another taxi. YES, you will end up paying the 110thb in the end but the other 55thb won't go to this scam artist
3. Do Not argue with a taxi driver, this is the best way to get hurt. smile at the motherfucker, tell him you know the scam he tried to pull and give him half so you both walk away somehow not losers (even though you got fucked a little)
4. Asking the taxi if he wants to make his money like this? hahahahahahahahaha you think he gives a fuck? he will be telling all his buddies about the young dumbass farang he cheated. these guys have no conscience.

That has to be the stupidest thing I have read lately.... so you're suggesting to people that because they are coming to a poor country they are going to be scammed adn that it's not a big deal to take it up the ass without whining?

People, if you are in a bar, unless you know them, pay your drinks as they arrive! don't let it stack up. Also, be careful because girls also build up these tickets with them for their drinks and sometimes put them in your cup if you order them a lady drink. It's not fair but many punters are ok with it.
Just be careful, but if you see you are being scammed, smile and tell them you caught them, joke about it and they will let you go without fuss.

Hahahahahah yeah, call me cynical but let me tell you how these lady think:

1. might not even have been her niece
2. they wanted to go out and turns out she just knew a sucker who would pay for it all
3. I strongly suggest you start to be a man in this relationship or you're going to be taken for a ride.... BIG time

Thai ladies can stay in relationships for years without giving out sex or even kissing! that's called a GIK. She sees you as her sugar daddy, the guy she can call if she needs to go out and all you will need in return is her company. As long as you are satisfied with it, it's ok but if you want to fuck her, I suggest you make your move soon! very soon before you fall hard on your forehead.

Not trouble, really.
I just don't forget who is the customer. As a customer, if something is not to my liking I have the right to stop and take my baht somewhere else.

One day I jumped in a taxi and before we got to 20 metres, I told him that the smoke smell made me dizzy (he was not smoking) but understood, stopped and let me get out.

Another day, the taxi was talking too much, I told him to be quiet but he continued asking questions... I asked him to stop, paid adn got out.

The Meter incident is obviously in the case where he refuses to put it on. and I have had taxi drivers telling me the meter was out of order. In that case I told them what I was ready to pay adn they had 2 choices: agree to it or stop. In both cases, he agreed to the amount I offered him for the ride.

I'm not going out of my way to prove a point, I am behaving like a customer

Strange girl was insisting. Reckoned she must be high on something as she was near apoplectic. I paid for the one drink and walked out the bar. Shes still shouting, and of course shouting in Thai.

I asked her how much she thinks I should be paying for the drink I didn't have. She shouts something like hundred baht. I find a Gnt 100 note, place it gently on floor then walk away. Highly wrong as I'm sure I could be beaten for placing Kings image on floor, but this gal was mad. Totally off her rocker.

Yeah, this kind of shit happens now and then in Thailand.

One night, I wanted to use the toilet at the Bali Hai pier in Pattaya. The signs said 5 baht, and the air head girl behind the counter told me 5 baht. I handed her a 5 baht coin ... she said "no good, 5 baht." I looked at the coin again, which was now sitting on the counter. It surely was a 5 baht coin. I looked at her, and she said "5 baht, no good." "OK," I said. I picked up the coin, put it in my pocket, waived to her, said "bye bye," turned around and walked away muttering to myself --- WTF!!!

it is a wholesale market but i believe you can buy 1 or 2...take the canal boat from Pratunam (across from Central up near the corner) which goes directly to the Bo Bae pier, most convenient way to get there....

i think a lot of farangs dont take kindly to being scammed...but you are right, better to not end up in the hospital over something so small...but i dont know where the line is..i was once in Chiang Mai, taking a public songthaew to the bus station..i was with my Thai at the time gf..we arrived, i gave the driver 30 baht (price 15 per person)...he tells me 60 baht...i tell him in Thai that i live here and that it is 15 baht per person always. He tells me 60 baht, i repeat again that i live here and know the price...he then looks at me and says in english, "fuck you." i was kind of surprised, just kind of stared at him and wondered what had happened to Thailand...at that point just gave him the 30 baht and walked away into the bus station....with some Thais, when you tell them in Thai that you know the price, they will often react comically, knowing they got caught, and say something like "okay, farang that can speak or read Thai can have Thai price," but with others, they get angry..

OK, basically you do the same as me.

The smoking thing upsets me too. I thought there was a law against smoking in Pattaya bars, but its violated all the time. I hate sitting in a bar enjoying the show when a smoker lights up beside me and the smoke drifts right into my face. Extremely offensive.

(I feel a bit guilty saying that as I used to smoke many years ago and couldn't understand if others didn't like it)

You are correct....the vendors really want a real wholesale order.....but they will tack on a few THB and sell you whatever you want....even one item.
