I do appreciate that this discussion should theoretically be on the Chinese Words & Phrases thread. However, I started the discussion here because I could not understand a post on this thread. I did not know the pinyin used and it proved to be incorrectly spelt. But even then I had not encountered the usage of the term. So, I also thought that it might be a term unique to Shanghai or Northern China.
Reasonably frequently, a discussion topic will broaden and technically should be transferred to another thread. Also, it is not uncommon for a post to refer to another place for reference or comparison. Thus, there are short discussions of SZ on the DG thread and vice versa etc, etc. When these events occur, members usually gracefully accept the slight OT nature of the discussion, as long as it does not continue interminably, and is relevant to our hobby.
And typically, if a poster does attempt to transfer a discussion to another thread, the discussion usually dies, or, still continues on the original thread.

What's the deal with the Merrylin in Pudong these days? It seems to have deteriorated somewhat. I visited recently on a Friday afternoon and was not offered a choice of girls. I find it highly unlikely that Western NGOs would be permitted to "disrupt social order" in China. I think that they would be imprisoned, fined and deported before they had time to make their first report.
