I land in Havana at 11 p.m this Sunday night from Toronto. Any suggestions on where to go on a Sunday night ? I've been to Cuba several times, but I'm always outside Havana (Guanabo/Santa Cruz de Norte/Matanzas) visiting family. I'm hoping to get into something on Sunday night before heading out to the country on Monday morning. Any suggestions on a club, a casa, and a chica? Is anyone down for hanging out and prowling the streets on the night of the 30th? Thanks in advance for the direction.

Establishing a Canadian bank account (checking) is very easy to do, just like in the States. I suggest that you open a bank account first and get a debit card in order to access cash while in Cuba. Getting the desired credit card is a simple matter once banking relations is established. I know this from personal experience. The only problem I have is getting ready-access to cash in Canada; it takes about 3 weeks for a deposited check to clear. That is assuming the deposited check is from the US. If you need access to cash immediately, the best way to do that is a simple wire transfer from your US account into your newly established bank account in Canada.

Now if only I had the "balls" to make the trip to Cuba.

Speaking of carnivals, I believe the Havana carnival runs every weekend from mid July to mid August of this year. Has anyone been to one of these? I would imagine there would be lots of girls (no school) but also lots of police. I think it would be a good time to go regardless of chicas. The Malecon is alive and well. Nothing near like the old days, of course, but there's a pretty good selection. When I was there most of the girls were on the stretch from Prado about a mile back toward Vedado. Also some pickins on Prado itself.

As for the dollar stores they have reopened, with prices increased 30% or more. Thank you Fidel Castro, and another "bend over and take it" to the Cuban people.

I just got off the phone from a monger friend and fellow Havanaphile. He said it took him over 3 weeks to get a visa from the (UK) Cuban consulate.

He used one of those visa-touts (agents), and they reported back to him that the consulate, which normally turns over a visa in half a day, wanted to “make enquires…” before issuing this tourist visa.

This is unheard off in all my years of travelling to Cuba. Indeed I would have thought that Fidel was crying out for tourist $, £ and E…

Has anyone heard about this or can shed light on it? My friend is a professional, impeccable record, rich and has travelled to Cuba 7 times over 3 years. I have never experienced any problems, but as I am about to get my own visa, my mind is racing.
