When giving money to a stranger I either want something in return, or I evaluate it on a case by case basis and need to be convinced that the person is really in need and that the money I give will be spent wisely. I wouldn't give money to a drug addict because I know he will spend it on a dose. But I will gladly buy a lemonade from kids selling it, and throw extra few bucks because I want to support them and I respect the fact that they are trying to make pocket money on their own. I almost always help out local street artists, because I appreciate what they do.

So many of us more experienced mongers know this happens all the time in many milieus. For example, when I was Dickhead in Buenos Aires, everyone in the clubs knew what I would pay and that I was good for it. Similarly I would take streetwalkers there to short term hotels with no prior discussion, because she knew she would get something and it would probably be more than she would get from an argie. Plus she could take a nice long hot shower, which they mostly could not at home with maybe a suicide shower.

This would sometimes lead me to wonder what would happen if I played dumb or whatever, and also to wonder why they would take said risk.
